Maccabi go down swinging in the rain

The Maccabi Ajax cricket club failed to fire over the weekend, losing to Monash University by 36 runs in a rain-reduced match.

Maccabi elected to send Monash University in to bat following a rain delay which reduced the match to 30 overs a side.

Bailey Melzak (5-29) bowled a brilliant opening spell, claiming 2 wickets and drawing several chances as the visitors struggled to generate momentum on a slow batting wicket.

Mark Soffer (1-29) picked up a crucial wicket early into his spell, thanks to a remarkable deflected catch taken by skipper Benji Jones.

Playing in his first match in over 4 years, Eli Lipshatz (1-26) made a strong impact on his return in a tight spell of bowling.

Simon Fisher (1-26) and Melzak both kept things tight at the death, as Melzak claimed his maiden 5 wicket haul for the club as Monash University finished their innings on 8-127.

Mendi Rosenbaum (19) and Mark Soffer (17) made a steady start to the chase as Maccabi moved to 2-45.

A rising required run rate meant that Maccabi’s middle order needed runs quickly, with Josh Jones (19) and Charlie Gross (15) giving their team some hope of victory.

The task proved too difficult for Maccabi though, as the side was dismissed for 91, 36 runs short of their target.

The 2nd XI remains unbeaten this season, after their clash with Moonee Valley was washed out without a ball being bowled.

The 3rd XI claimed a crucial 12-run victory against Thornbury Turf Strokers on Sunday.

Maccabi made 3-145 from their 35 overs. The side was led by a classy half century by Arik Singer (60).

A complete team effort by Maccabi allowed them to dismiss the home side for 133 in response.
