Maccabi kick start season in style

The Maccabi Ajax Cricket club has laid the foundations for a successful season, with all three sides recording wins in the opening match of the season.

Entering his 3rd season of captaincy, Benji Jones won the toss and elected to bat in picturesque conditions at Carnegie.

His side soon found themselves in early trouble though, falling to 3-28 after 10 overs.

A typically aggressive Nochum Paltiel (58) helped dig his team out of trouble, striking 9 boundaries in his half century.

Paltiel was joined at the crease by Urban Alley Player of the round, Josh Jones (72), whose classy innings helped push his side into the ascendency.

Handy contributions from Meir New (22) and Levi Rosenbaum (13 not out) helped push Maccabi’s total to a competitive 9-202 from their 45 overs.

Spinner Simon Fisher (4-25) opened the bowling, and the decision was an inspired one as Fisher claimed 3 vital wickets in his opening spell.

Spin proved to be successful for the visitors, with Mark Soffer (3-27) also having success against Carnegie’s middle order.

Josh Jones (1-21) rounded out a brilliant all-round performance by claiming the final wicket to dismiss Carnegie for 161.

The 2nd XI fought back from a sluggish start to record a comprehensive 7 wicket win over Indigos in a reduced overs match.

Reece Israel (5-23) was the pick of the bowlers as Maccabi kept the home side to 9-129 from their 20 overs.

2nd XI captain Dov Paltiel (76) starred in the chase, seeing his side home for the loss of 3 wickets.

The 3rd XI held their nerve to record a memorable victory against East Malvern Tooronga.

Amir Meyerowitz (4-13), Nadav Moskow (2-18) and Arik Singer all claimed multiple wickets to help restrict the visitors to 143.

Zac Aflalo (38) led the way with the bat as Maccabi scored the winning runs in the final over with 4 wickets to spare.
