Jackas relinquish top spot in a tough weekend

Posted: 22-Feb-2018 by Cricket Senior

Maccabi has relinquished top spot on the ladder in the final round of the season, following a disappointing 7-wicket defeat at the hands of Melbourne Cobras on Sunday.

Having been sent in to bat, Maccabi’s innings never got going as wickets became a regular occurrence.

A slow outfield made runs hard to come by, and poor running between the wickets cost Maccabi during crucial stages of the innings.

The visitors were only able to scrape together 65 runs in 40 overs before being bowled out, with Ari Werdiger (12) making the top score.

Maccabi required early wickets for any chance at victory, and Werdiger (1-19) broke through in his first over.

A number of half chances went down for Maccabi, as the home side went on the attack.

Shmuli Rosenbaum (1-11) picked up a late wicket but the damage was done, as the Cobras passed the total in the 14th over.

Maccabi will now turn their attention to a semi final clash with Malvern next weekend.

The 2nd XI were unable to close out their season with a victory, going down to Reds by 14 runs.

Strong bowling performances by Corey Zielinski (3-22), Bailey Epstein (2-14), Simon Fisher (2-16) and Benji Gore (2-17) helped bowl Reds out for 98.

Zielinski (29 not out) played a lone hand with the bat and ran out of partners in the 39th over.

The 3rd XI fell just short of winning club stalwart Ian Jones’ final game.

Eli Barr (4-13) and Dean Wainstein (2-18) continued their consistent bowling performances this season, while fittingly, Jones (3-11) finished his career with wickets on his final two balls to help dismiss Melbourne Falcons for 89.

Josh Goldsmith (30) helped put his side on track for victory, but the middle order struggled to get going for Maccabi, as the side fell 14 runs short of the target.

This weekend, the 1st XI takes on Malvern in the Semi Final on Sunday, at 11:45am at Righetti Oval.
