Jackas given reality check

Posted: 22-Feb-2018 by Cricket Senior

Maccabi Ajax will look to regain their form after suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Doveton North.

Doveton elected to bat first in ideal batting conditions, but were in early trouble due to a promising new ball spell by Josh Jones (2-27) and Bailey Melzak (1-42).

The home side’s middle order were able to recover from 4-42, despite tidy spells from spinners Simon Fisher (3-43) and Shmuli Rosenbaum (2-28).

Doveton’s lower order successfully hit out late in the innings to help lift the total to 188 before being dismissed in the final over.

Shmuli Rosenbaum (26) and Mark Soffer (21) appeared to have the run chase on track in their 49-run opening stand.

Their dismissals triggered a massive collapse for Maccabi, as the side was dismissed for just 74.

The 1st XI remain a game clear in 2nd position on the ladder with two rounds remaining in the season.

The 2nd XI’s batting struggles cost them victory against Powerhouse.

Maccabi never got going after being sent in to bat, being bowled out for 95. Steven Lustig (26 not out) made the top score.

Club great Daniel Onas (1-15) bowled brilliantly with the new ball, as did young leg spinner Bailey Epstein (2-18), but the total proved too few in the end as Powerhouse passed the total with 5 wickets to spare.

The 3rd XI put in a strong team performance in the field to bowl Batman’s Hill out for 115.

The wickets were evenly amongst the team, with Barry Kave (2-15) and Eli Barr (2-17) claiming multiple wickets.

Despite contributions from Amir Meyerowitz (17) and Ari Werdiger (16), Maccabi never got going in their chase to be dismissed for 71.

This weekend, the 1st XI takes on Clayton Navy on Sunday at Gary Smorgon Oval for the club’s annual Past Players Family Day.
