Campaign to Win Back Rugby Gold at the 2017 Maccabiah Games

Every four years the Maccabiah Games are held in Israel. Known as the “Jewish Olympics”, these games attract over 9,000 athletes of Jewish heritage from more than 78 countries including Australia, USA, Great Britain, France, Russia, and South Africa, making it the third largest sporting event on the international sporting calendar. Australia has taken part in every Maccabiah since 1932, and will be sending a team of about 450 athletes, managers and coaches to compete in the 20th Maccabiah to be held in various centres around Israel between 4 July and 18 July 2017.

The Australian rugby team boasts a proud record at the Maccabiah, having won the gold medal in 2009, and losing narrowly to the Israeli national team in the 2013 finals for the silver medal.

The campaign to win back the gold in 2017 is well under way. Internationally renowned coach, Mike Penistone, formerly of Leicester Tigers, NSW Waratahs and Eastern Suburbs (www.rugbycoachingconsultancy.com), has been appointed as head coach. His assistant is Keiran Wallace, faculty and rugby master at Shore School, who will be the forwards coach.

Trials to select eligible rugby players to compete at the 20th Maccabiah will be held on Sunday, 12 June 2016 at Eastern Suburbs Rugby Club, O’Sullivan Road, Bellevue Hill, NSW (times to be announced).

To be eligible you must be of Jewish heritage or background, 18 or older (or turning 18 prior to 29 June 2017), and currently playing rugby for a club or school (in certain circumstances if you’re not playing rugby during season 2016, you may still be eligible).

Interested players should contact either of the co-managers, David Greenstein (davidgreensteinlaw@gmail.com) or Ron Molnar (rmolnar2@bigpond.net.au) to register their interest and obtain more information.
