Posted: 29-Aug-2021 by Maccabi WA

Over 120 guests enjoyed one of the last events for the Jewish Centre at the Maccabi Annual awards for 2020. 6 perpetual awards were awarded along with 3 very deserving recipients for Life membership.
Damian Martin ex Wildcat; six-time NBL champion and six-time NBL defensive player considered one of the NBL’s all time best defenders was our guest speaker. Damian entertained us with all his stories of growing up in rural NSW, getting a scholarship to a top tier US College, his big break for Wildcats playing for 11 seasons, and being in the Australian team for the  Commonwealth Games, and Rio Olympics.

Our Maccabi award winners were:

Ethel Finkelstein Rising Star Award for 2020 - Rafi Cowan for Basketball

Rafi was one of the very first players to join the Maccabi basketball club as a 12 year old when it was resurrected in 2016. Rafi is currently an integral part of the very successful Maccabi Under 18 boys team, and also plays for the  Warwick Senators U18 Championship Division representative team. In recent years Rafi has excelled both at Domestic level and also at Representative level in the WA Basketball League.
Domestically, Rafi’s achievements include:
 • Most Valuable Player in 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2021
• Best Defensive player in 2019
• 2020 U18 Div 1 Winter season Champion
• 2020/2021 U18 Div 1 Summer season Champion (and Grand Final MVP)
• Captain of Carmel School Basketball team
Rafi’s representative achievements include:
2017 – U14 East Perth MVP

Rafi has also nominated for Junior Maccabiah Basketball and we are extremely confident he will be one of the first players selected.
Along with these achievements, Rafi is a highly determined, highly skilled player, respected and admired by his teammates and coaches and natural leader both on and off the court

The Maurice Krasenstein Junior Sportsperson of the year award 2020 - Royie Rahamim for Soccer

Royie began playing soccer at Maccabi and did so for seven years. He won the golden boot award each season and fairest and best in his final two seasons at Maccabi. He moved to Bayswater City SC to play in the NPL in 2017 where he was the league’s top goal scorer in both years he was at the club. In 2017/18 his team won the Bunbury Cup and he won the tournament’s golden boot. Royie was then selected for the U14 State team in 2019 and was appointed Vice Captain of the side; they won the National Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour.

In 2020, he moved to Perth Glory where he made a debut in the first team and scored at age 15; he then won the academy’s Rising Star award.

The Ivan Sharp Administrator of the Year Award for 2020 - Simone Hesse

If we need anything done at Maccabi we always ask Simone!! She is a very willing and enthusiastic volunteer for all things Maccabi. Simone’s  family has always been involved in the soccer club and her husband Sharne still plays soccer. One of Simone’s roles is junior Development at the soccer club, but she volunteers at the cafe, helps at our fundraising events and sports camps, helps with admin at the basketball club and does whatever is humanely possible. Her 3 kids and husband Sharn are her greatest fans. We would be lost without Simone and her amazing organisational skills and respect and willingness to help us.

Criteria for Life Membership

Life membership is an honour bestowed on an individual or member whose exceptional, loyal, and outstanding service and contribution has provided a measurable benefit to Maccabi WA over an extended period of time. It would be expected that a nominee will have made a contribution that goes beyond the normal role of an ordinary member. The nominee must demonstrate that they believe in the mission of the organisation, and a bestowed Life Membership will recognise their long term support for Maccabi WA.

Ruth Topelberg for her outstanding contribution to administration and 27 years as President of Hora Maccabi dance club.

Ruth Topelberg grew up in Melbourne, and was a keen hockey player at school at MountScopus. At around 15, she was encouraged to play for AJAX, and from there, at the very young age of 17, she became the hockey delegate to the AJAX Council.

Ruth involved herself totally in this role, and thus became the Victorian delegate to the Australian Maccabi Conferences at the Sydney Carnival in 1968/69, and the following year at the Perth Carnival in 1969/70 – 1971 joined Maccabi W.A. Executive, Committee member or Assistant Team Manager for 6 Interstate Carnivals, and in addition, was a committee member for the first Perth Junior Carnival.

Between 1972 and 1979, Ruth held positions on the executive, as secretary and publicity officer on the Australian Maccabi Council, which evolved into Australian Maccabi Federation, now Maccabi Australia.  A highlight was organizing the Australian Team for the Maccabiah Games.
Ruth has been President of the Hora Maccabi Israeli Folk Dancing Club since its inception 27 years ago – and she remains an active and enthusiastic member of the club. In 2014 Ruth was a joint recipient (with Justine Sharbanee) of the Ivan Sharp Administrator of the Year Award. Maccabi has always played a big part in Ruth’s life. As she has herself reaped so much from her involvement, she is delighted to put back.
