Junior Carnival - connecting our kids through sport and fun!!

Posted: 24-Jan-2018 by Maccabi WA

What a WOW week!! Melbourne Carnivals are known to be fabulous and exciting and this one didn’t disappoint. 350 kids from all over Australia, 35 from Perth enjoyed an action packed week of competitive sport, social sport , active social events and just plain fun messy events!!

The week started with a glow disco opening ceremony, with the next 2 days involving competitive basketball, netball, and soccer with semi finals and finals. Of course everyone thought the  big competition was going to be between Vic and NSW but our ‘silent but deadly’ WA soccer team won the gold!! Well done to those boys who also enjoyed a winning season at Maccabi WA. Netball and Basketball also showed great potential getting into semi finals in all sports.

The next couple of nights  were filled with wet fun at a BBQ dinner and pool party at an enormous aquatic centre and the highlight of the week the colour fun / foam party. The advice was “ dress to get messy” and the kids did exactly that. The next day was an fabulous day at Aqua Fun Park where the kids bounced, slid and splashed their way over  100m of inflatable bridges, slides, onto the trampoline and through hamster wheels.

Needing time for a chill out night the next night was barefoot bowls night led by the Mac Vic Bowling club with lots of bean bags for the kids to socialise and talk with their new friends in between bowling. Unforltunately the next day was a very hot 38 degrees which hampered the mixed state ‘Colour Games’ Amazing race but the kids did their best in the stifling conditions. That night was  another chance to be active at Bounce Trampoline centre. The finale before a quiet Shabbat was Community Day which was a superb opportunity for the kids to give back to many needed charities  with over 18 Victorian Jewish Charities benefiting from the kids enthusiasm.

The closing party was a night of Thanks and reflection with the kids able to say their last goodbyes to their new found friends and to prepare to go home exhausted and exhilarated.

Enormous thanks to our Team Manager Belinda Wolpert and Assistant Manager Dawn Ott who looked after all the kids as their own and will be in great need of a rest this week. They were organised and calm and we owe them a big thanks for giving up their own time to watch over our kids and make sure they were safe and having fun. Our WA Youth Leaders; Ari and Natalia Berelowitz, Jade Katz, Eliza Sharbanee, Galia Koff, Remmi Missell, and Sami Toister were also brilliant and made sure that all our kids were in the right teams, playing great sport and making friends – which after all is the point of this whole week.  Our Youth leaders still managed to have fun and went out every night after the kids  were tucked up in bed with their billets.
