Maccabi WA says goodluck, farewell and pays tribute to past athletes

Posted: 06-Jun-2017 by Maccabi WA

Over 130 people joined Maccabi WA in commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Maccabiah Bridge disaster and wishing our WA athletes and Managers safe travels to the Games in July.

In front of many WA dignitaries and politicians, ‘Chief de Mission’ Tom York and Maccabi WA President Joan Hillman hosted a moving and wonderful evening. Tom York has enormous experience in Basketball playing and management in the wider community, and this is his 6th Maccabiah Games having started his journey in 1969 as a player.

Commemorating the 4 victims of the bridge disaster  by lighting a candle in their honour were David Kacev for Greg Small, David Bennett for Yetty Bennett, Jane Glasser for Elizabeth Sawicky and Tony Tate for Warren Zines. Rabbi Dovid Freilich OAM gave a moving Kaddish which the whole community appreciated.

The 2nd half of the evening was an exciting tribute to our WA athletes, launching the fabulous Maccabiah uniforms, with the Maccabiah torch which has toured the world in preparation for the games. We were privileged to have Damian Martin Captain of Perth Wildcats and Rio Olympian as our guest speaker giving insights into the last month of preparation for an International Games and life in the Rio Olympic Village.

Throughout the night were 3 wonderful motivational videos which will be available to view on the Maccabi WA website on www.maccabi/WA.com.au

We wish all our athletes safe travels and lots of luck!!
