Alan Breckler Memorial Gardens

Posted: 10-May-2017 by Maccabi WA

Maccabi WA is proud of the recently renovated Alan Breckler Memorial Gardens located behind the Jewish Centre, and the creation of a special garden in honour of Alan Breckler.

Sandy Machlin in a tribute to her former husband Alan said that he made a great contribution to commercial and community life in Western Australia.  He had three passions in life -his family, his business, and his dedication and love for Maccabi, which he saw as a way forward for the youth of Perth.  During his short 46 years, he served some 20 years with Maccabi WA and also at the National level.  Alan was Assistant Team Manager to the 1973 Maccabiah Games and Team Manager 4 years later.  He served as President of W.A. Maccabi from 1966 to 1970 and became President of the Maccabi Federation for which he became a Life Member.  His leadership and ability endeared him to many within the Jewish sporting community.

Alan Breckler became founder and first President of the Jewish Centre opened in November 1973, which he saw as the beating heart of Perth.  The building has done great service since that time.  It is pleasing to know that the garden was used during the last Junior Carnival and for youth groups since then, and for community events. In the future, in keeping with Alan’s philosophies and beliefs.  The Breckler family would like to thank Maccabi W.A. for dedicating this garden to the memory of a man who served the organisation so well.

The total renovation of the Alan Breckler Memorial Gardens was a major undertaking which took place beginning in July 2016.  This coincided with the construction of the Menora Charity Fund building in the north-east corner of the gardens.  Included in the renovations was the removal of old unsightly sheds and accumulated rubbish hidden in the undergrowth.  New sheds are located next to the groundsman’s shed, security fencing bought from the Perth Hebrew Congregation for the western border has been installed, and a new Alan Breckler Memorial Gardens plaque erected.  Both the new gardens and the MCF building were completed by the end of 2016 and are now in full usage.

The Breckler Gardens is owned and maintained by Maccabi WA and is available for community groups in particular to participate in communal events.  In a commitment to local youth Bnei Akiva and Habonim Dror enjoy weekend use of the Breckler Gardens during specified times.  It is available for hire at other times which can be arranged through the Maccabi office.
