Olympic Archer Opens WA Archery Club

Posted: 17-Sep-2015 by Maccabi WA

WA Maccabi was honoured to officially launch the Archery club on the weekend celebrations of the 90th Anniversary, with many guest VIP archers. Over 30 new beginner archers turned up to try out the sport, showing great promise for this new club.

Jeff Holloway our Club Patron and his wife Karen came from Melbourne and Club President Jeremy Raiter was delighted to host them at the Gala dinner on the Saturday night. Jeff then lent his expertise to all of our archers who came on Sunday to practice their skills and learn some new ones.

Olympic archer Deonne Bridger (1996 Atlanta and 2004 Athens Olympics), gave an awesome display and then helped many of our Maccabi beginners "have a go with the bow". Deonne bought several National champions with her who were also only too happy to give a hand. The professional demonstrations were thoroughly enjoyed by all and inspired many of the new members - forever hopeful of making the next Maccabiah team.

After the demonstration all the guests went into the Gordon Bloomfield Hall where MLA Michael Sutherland Member for Mount Lawley officially opened the club. One of the highlights of the afternoon was the presentation from our local North Perth branch of Bendigo Bank  who showed their support of Maccabi with a generous donation of $2500 for all our clubs in honour of our 90th Anniversary. President Joan Hillman gratefully accepted this cheque.

Jeff Holloway then spoke giving Club President Jeremy Raiter all the kudos he deserves for seeing the formation of this club to fruition over the last 2 years. Jeff represented Australia in the last Maccabiah Games and encouraged all our archers to keep persevering with their passion as they too could make the team to represent Australia in the future. The afternoon was wrapped up with Jeff Holloway and Deonne Bridger kindly presenting all our beginner archers with their certificate of completing their beginners course at Maccabi.
