Posted: 10-Apr-2014 by Maccabi WA

Alan Shear President of Maccabi WA welcomed everyone to the prestigious annual Sports Awards for 2013. The special guests included MLA's Michael Sutherland and Ian Britza. A big to thank the family members, friends and the Maccabi community for all the nominations as worthy recipients for the 2013 awards.

Winner George Cohen Jewish Sportsperson of the Year:

AMOS GOLLACH  - 24 year old Ironman triathlete

In 2013, Amos competed in the  Ironman World Championships, in Kona Hawaii, USA. He was 1st in the 18-24 Age Group in a time of 9:01.15, making him the 18-24 Age Group World Triathlon (Ironman) Champion and also placing him at the top of the overall Ironman World Rankings . An Ironman is an unforgiving and grueling event, as much a test of mental courage as of athletic ability and endurance.  It consists of a 3.86km open-water (usually ocean) swim, immediately followed by a 180.2km cycle ride and finishes off with a full marathon (42.2km) run, all undertaken without a break and to be completed within a cut off time of 17 hours.  In a sport where endurance usually peaks somewhere between 30-35 years of age, the top professional athletes complete an Ironman course in eight plus hours; beginners and more senior athletes typically manage to finish in around 15 hours.  The Kona Ironman World Championship race with its heat, humidity, wind and endless climbs on the cycle leg constantly test the athletes’ resolve.
