Maccabi Water Polo Premiership

Posted: 15-Dec-2016 by Waterpolo

Ajax Maccabi Water Polo celebrated a crushing win over Melbourne Surge 6-1 to take out the State league 7 State championship last week. Ajax had a remarkable season, only losing 2 games. The team is made up of a mix of veterans & juniors. Andrew Joel was the star of the game, scoring 4 goals from strong centre forward work. Brea Lukav scored 2 goals from great drives through the centre. Ajax kept Surge goalless until the last time 2 minutes of the game. Goalie Dan Fine had his best game of the season stopping nearly everything that was shot at him. The defence was impressive. The team press gave Surge very little opportunity to score. Veterans Nigel Givoni & Paul Fleiszig shared centre back duties, stopping the Surge centre backs getting any shots off for the game. Juniors Zac Fleiszig & Eli Janover were very impressive creating a number of turnovers & scoring opportunities. They have shown great improvement throughout the season and have started to impose themselves on the game. As Usual Anthony Frosh was extremely reliable mopping up loose balls and creating attacking opportunities.  David Nussbaum & Sam Radford both played well despite missing a large amount of the season.

Despite finishing the season second on the ladder, Ajax's State League 3 team lost the preliminary final to a dominant Melbourne Collegians team that ended up taking out the premiership. Ex-Israeli international Ofer Rodelsheimer topped the goal scoring for the season. He was presented with the goal scoring trophy by Water Polo Victoria. The team lead by Alon Pfau & Joel Price struggled through the season to field teams due to low numbers. Goalie Chris Moyle had a very solid season with some very impressive saves. Paul Fleiszig & Anthony Frosh supported the team through the season.

Ajax is now looking forward to the 2017 season. Pre-season training starts in late February and the club is looking at recruiting new players to help support both teams.
