Joey Pat 7-8

Jess Flicker 8-3

Steven Gostin 8-6

Marty Schwarz 7-8

Pat/Flicker 7-5 6-1

Gostin/Schwarz 6-4 5-7 6-3

We played at the most picturesque courts in Melbourne at Liston tennis club Williamstown overlooking the water and all the boats it put u in the right frame of mind !!
We played the doubles first
Joey/Jessie played to together and a very competent pair and were down 2/4 40/0 only to fight back to win the game and eventually the set 7/5 the steamrolled the their opponents 6/1
Steven/Marty came back fro 2/4 to win the first 6/4 in the 2nd had chances for a 6/5 lead but couldn’t get done dropping the 2nd 5/7 but the knuckled down to take the 3rd 6/3
In the singles joey was playing a big serving guy and fought really well to lead 7/4 and created a heap of match points “10 I’m told “ which he just couldn’t take going down 7/8
Jessie played solidly to win 8/3
Steven went up 7/3 had the wobbles before eventually winning 8/6
Marty fought really hard just going down 7/8
Overall a great win against the team sitting second on the ladder

Section 5 Carmelite 5-6-62 def Maccabi 1-3-40

Jan Tenenberg 1-8

Marcus Frajman 2-8

Ryan Behr 6-8

Daniel Henquin 3-8

Tenenberg/Frajman 7-6 7-6

Behr/Henquin 1-6 7-6 6-7

We were given a bit of a rude shock, losing all four singles matches.  Only Ryan's match was close and the other three were fairly one sided.  Some of us found it difficult to counteract unusual playing styles.  In the doubles, we wanted to salvage some points and respect and both matches were closely contested.  The highlight of the afternoon was seeing in attendance our teammate Matias, who is now ready to play again after an injury layoff.

Section 6 Maccabi 4-6-46 Beat Clarinda 2-2-34

Warren Steinberg 4-8

Michael Selzer 8-1

Steven Kleytman 8-2

Adam Needleman 1-8

Steinberg/Selzer 7-5 6-2

Kleytman/Needleman 6-4 6-4

Playing a team trying to get the second spot was not going to be easy. They beat us last time 3-3. Today we all pulled together as a team and won a tight contest and look likely to finish second and therefore make a GrandFinal. The highlight was definitely the involvement of Michael Selzer for his first match. Steven Kleytman and Michael guided us to victory with two wins for the day each.   Warren was a solid contributor as we have come to expect.

Section 9 Maccabi 6-8-68 def St Anthony's 0-2-50

Ben Pollak 8-6

Daniel Goodrich 8-5

Errol Dorfan 8-2

Jack Stock 8-3

Goodrich/Dorfan 6-3 4-6 7-6

Pollak/Stock 5-7 7-6 7-6

With our inspirational skipper out, “managed” and with the reality that we were up against the top team in our section, our backs were against the wall, however that’s exactly how we like it. With possibly our best win in a couple years, we clean-sweeped our opposition.
Ben took on an opponent he lost to in a tiebreak just less than a month ago, however even though he was down 5-3 and had just conceded the last 3 games, he managed to claw back the momentum and in his best performance of the season, he won it 8-6.
Daniel hadn’t played for in excess of 3 months, but no one could tell, against a tricky opponent, Daniel played a terrific match and won it 8-5.
Our team’s undoubted MVP for the season, Errol, added another win to his record this season, remaining undefeated in singles with an 8-2 victory
Jack was the final singles match, and very efficiently with a below 10 total number of unforced errors, he consolidated the team’s lead with an 8-3 win.
In doubles, Daniel and Errol won the first set 6-3 and although they lost a tight second set 6-4, they were clutch to win a 3rd set match tiebreak. Ben and Jack’s match was an absolute rollercoaster, after being a couple points away from winning the first set 6-4, they ended up losing it 7-5. Again in the second set, after being up a break, their opponents served for the match and after saving 2 match points, Ben and Jack won the second set tiebreak and then “game managed” the match tiebreak, winning the team’s second match tiebreak of the day, confirming the clean sweep.
Lastly, it was also a terrific effort from the Maccabi fashion department, as it was thought that our opponents were intimidated by our professional look and they considered it pointless in trying to beat us as even when we lost points, we looked damn good doing it.
