9 November 2019 - Round 5 Summer

Section 6 talented youngster Brad Lowe had his first men's singles win. Brad is playing at number 1 in the team and competing very well week to week

In Round 5, there were wins for two Maccabi teams.  One team drew, four teams lost and the mixed doubles team had a bye.

MEN:

Section 2 Elsternwick Park 5-6-55 def Maccabi 1-1-31

Max Needleman 6-8

Steven Gostin 8-7

Jordan Jaffe 4-8

Marty Schwarz 1-8

Needleman/Gostin 3-6 2-6

Jaffe/Schwarz 4-6 3-6

In very windy showery weather we managed to complete all our matches against a very solid team
Jordy and Marty went on first
Jordy was playing a big hitting leftie who just seemed to hit all the winning shots at the right time with jordy eventually going down in toa tight match 4/8 good effort by jordy
Marty played against a player who just played the one extra shot each time in a match where the score didn’t reflect the closeness of the general play 1/8
Steven played against a player with a big forehand and despite having numerous game points/break points found himself down 0/4
Steven made some adjustments in strategy and fought back to lead 5/4 and eventually a tiebreaker ensued which steven won 8/7
Maxy playing a really good player raced out to a 6/3 with some smart strategy coming in at the right time to volley and dropshots to put off his opponent but maxy just couldn’t maintain his consistency and then his confidence eventually losing a tight match 6/8
In the doubles max/steven played against a seasoned pair going down 3&2 while Marty/jordy played good doubles against a solid pair but just couldn't find a way to win going down 4&3
- Steven Gostin

Section 4 Maccabi 2-3-38 drew with Ormond 2-3-40
Geoff Rosenberger 0-8
Damon Flicker 8-7
Jamie Muscatel 8-2
Ryan Behr 7-8
Geoff/ Damon 2-6 3-1
Jamie/Ryan 7-5 3-3

Playing the no.1 ranked team was an opportunity to provide some clarity to our chances this season and the signs were very promising.
Geoff was completely outplayed, however Damon showed a lot of grit to come from 02 to overcome his talented opponent.
Jamie was mentally too strong in an entertaining match and Ryan was close against a patchy opponent.
In a familiar pattern, Ryan and Jamie came from 25 down to pinch the 1st set and were showing signs of victory in the 2nd.
Whilst Damon and Geoff improved considerably in the 2nd set leading 31 before rain stopped play.
- Geoff Rosenberger

Section 6 Maccabi 6-8-57 def St Patricks 0-1-32

Brad Lowe 8-5

Steven Kleytman 8-4

Adam Needleman 8-4 ( strained hamstring on second last point and replaced in doubles by Jan Tenenberg . A big thanks to Jan for coming !! )

David Kenley 8-3

Lowe/Kleytman 6-3 6-2

Kenley/Tenenberg(emergency) 1-6 6-2 6-3

Another freezing cold summer season Saturday. The ball was moving a metre sideways in a strong cross wind. We are now the only Maccabi team to play every point of our 5 matches without any washouts. After losing our first two matches we have bounced back as I predicted to be nicely placed with 3 wins and 2 losses.
A special mention to Brad Lowe who has won his first singles in adult tennis. Great effort from a 16yo at this level. To celebrate the occasion I forced a very reluctant Brad to have his photo taken for the weekly match report circular. Lets keep the good form going.
- Adam Needleman

Section 7 Lauriston 3-5-50 def Maccabi 3-4-41

David Zulman            8-5
Doron Livshitz          8-7
Joel Rabinov            1-8
Ron Schweitzer  8-4
Doron & Joel            4-6, 6-2, 0-6
David and Ron   3-6, 3-6

Windy conditions greeted us at Lauriston and we had 4 courts to start our singles with.  The day started somewhat problematic when Zvi pulled up sick, having vomited most of the night and a replacement was needed.  After many phone calls and discussions, Joel Rabinov kindly put up his hand to help us out, especially when he realised he would be playing with 2 other Carlton supporters … what better way to enjoy the off-season.
We welcomed David into the team for his first game this season after finishing his dentistry course during the week.  All players struggled with the windy conditions, but David, Doron and Ron managed to handle them well enough to secure wins.  So 3-1 up after the singles, still some work to do.
The doubles took to court, with us needing to win one of the doubles to secure victory.  Unfortunately, as so many Maccabi teams have done before us, we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, despite Doron and Joel’s valiant effort, we weren’t able to pull off a doubles’ win meaning we went down by one set for the day.
Singles are important, but at the end of the day, if you don’t win the singles 4-0, you still need to win at least one doubles’ rubber.
- David Zulman

Section 8 Dendy Park 6-8-60 def Maccabi 0-1-35

Ben Pollak 3-8

Mor Dahan 7-8

Daniel Goodrich 2-8

Nathan Rapoport 1-8

Pollak/Daniel 4-6 3-6

Goodrich/Rapoport 3-6 6-3 6-7

Today was a pretty tough day against a very good team, the team was Ben, Mor, Daniel and Nathan.
Ben started poorly, conceding 8 of the first 9 points, although he got back up 3-2, he lost it 8-3 in a disappointing day.
Mor started very slow as well, going down 5-0, however lifted big time to get the match into a tiebreak, although she had chances in the breaker, she unfortunately went down 9-7.
Similarly to Ben, Nathan and Daniel had disappointing matches, losing 8-1 and 8-2 respectively.
In doubles, Ben and Mor teamed up pretty well and although they got it back from 4-1 down to 4-4, they couldn’t capitalise, Lodi g the first 6-4 then losing the second 6-3. The match was quite frustrating as both Ben and Mor thought they could’ve won the match.
Daniel and Nathan unfortunately lost the first set 6-3, however won the second set 6-3 in a much better set. The 3rd set had many twists and turns and unfortunately couldn’t take advantage of their chances, to also lose a very tight 3rd set tiebreak.
Overall, a pretty annoying day, however there is still hope to win the next couple weeks and put us in a better position.
- Ben Pollak

Section 9 Dendy Park 3-5-51 def Maccabi 2-4-45

Lauren Yarrow 3-8

Lachie Zuker 1-8

Nathan Needleman 8-5

Daniel Vertes 7-5

Yarrow/Zuker 6-2 2-6 2-6

Needleman/Vertes 3-6 6-0 7-5

So close again!
Daniel and little Adam (Nathan) teamed up for the first time and didn't disappoint coming back from 2-5 in the third to win 7-5.
Unfortunately, Lauren and Lachie lost in three after comfortably taking the first set.
In singles, Lauren and Lachie were both defeated but put up good fights.
Nathan completed the daily double and Daniel had three match points but couldn't bring home the kosher bacon at 7-4 before rain stopped play.
- Daniel Vertes
