Grade 3 Maccabi 4-8-51 def Mount Eliza 0-0-24

Asaf Nagar/Nick Hornstein 6-3 6-0 and 6-3 6-0

Joel Fredman/Robert Minc 7-5 7-5 and 7-5 6-3

With a possible finals spot up for grabs, the grade 3 team gave themselves the best possible chance for finals action with a resounding 4-0 home court victory over mt Eliza.
Captain Asaf nagar and boom recruit nick hornstein got off to a slow start, however after finding themselves 3-2 down in the first set, proceeded to reel off the next 10 games for a 6-3, 6-0 win over their no. 1 opponents.
Veterans rob minc and joel Fredman combined together to produce some quality doubles tennis, coming back strongly in the second set to complete a 7-5, 7-5 win.
The nagar/hornstein combination proved too strong for their no. 2 opponents in the reverse doubles, again registering a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win.
The experience and guile of the minc/Fredman combo proved too much for their no. 1 opponents in the reverse rubber, with the 7-5, 6-3 win completing a 4-0 whitewash.
A bye next week leaves one last remaining chance for a win to scrape into the top 4.
- Joel Fredman

Grade 6 Coatesville 2-5-43 def Maccabi 2-4-49

Marcus Frajman/Ryan Sharp 7-5 4-6 6-2 and 6-0 6-3

Jamie Muscatel/Ryan Behr 5-7 4-6 and 6-7 5-7

Despite winning more games, we lost by a set.  Both Maccabi pairs started slowly and were down 4-1 in the opening rubbers.  They came back and Marcus and Ryan S did well to win the opening set, saving set points.  The reverse happened for Jamie and Ryan B, who had set points but could not convert them.  In the end, there was a very fine margin separating the two teams.  To make matters worse, Ryan B played most of the day with back soreness and we have also lost our #1 Geoff for the season due to injury.

Grade 7 Maccabi 4-8-61 def University of Melbourne 0-3-42

Jordan and Marty 6-2 6-3 & 3-6 6-2 6-4
Steven and Jan 6-3 6-7 6-3 & 3-6 6-1 7-5

The Grade 7 Section 1 team travelled to Melbourne Uni to play in what would be a very solid win.
Despite being caught in horrendous traffic and having to jump on court straight away, Marty and Jordan started out by playing solid and consistent tennis, taking the match 6-2 6-3 with few dramas. However, this was to be the only drama-less match of the day. On the adjacent court, Steven and Jan had taken the first set 6-3. Their opponents fought back, however, saving 4 match points to win the second set in a tiebreaker. Steven and Jan regrouped and valiantly prevailed to win the third set 6-3.
In the reverse doubles, Marty and Jordan were stunned by their opponents; at one point being 1-5 down in the first set. Regaining some momentum, the pair lost the set 3-6 but managed to carry on with their winning streak to take the second and third sets 6-2 6-4 respectively. Similarly, Jan and Steven dropped the first set of their second match 3-6 but were able to systematically demolish their opponents in the second set, snatching it 6-1. In the battle for the third set, Jan and Steven yet again prevailed, winning the tight third set 7-5.
So despite some small scares throughout the day, a very convincing win. Hopes for the number 1 spot on the ladder are still alive.
- Marty Schwarz

Grade 7 Heathmont 4-8-53 def Maccabi 0-1-29

Daniel Henquin/Adam Klein 4-6 2-6 and 3-6 2-6

Zvi Schweitzer/Ron Schweitzer 2-6 7-5 4-6 and 1-6 4-6

We travelled out to Heathmont tennis club in quite idyllic surrounding, trees and greenery everywhere.  Good tennis was played by both pairs, unfortunately the opposition were just too good and whenever scores got close they were able to find an extra gear.
A lovely afternoon of tennis even though we failed to win a rubber.
- Ron Schweitzer

Grade 9 Maccabi 3-7-48 def Mulgrave 1-2-29

Daniel Goodrich/Doron Livshitz 7-5 6-3 and 6-0 6-2

Ben Pollak/Jack Stock 6-1 6-3 and 4-6 6-3 1-6

With the inspirational skipper once again missing, due to footy commitments we had the same team with Ben and Jack as one pair and Daniel and Doron as the other pair.
Both pairs breezes through their matches against the opposition’s second pair, with Ben and Jack winning 6-1 6-3 and Daniel and Doron winning 6-0 6-2.
The matches against the first pair were far more competitive, Daniel and Doron were in a very tight first set and although there were missed chances late in the set they still took it 7-5, the second set was similar but Daniel and Doron were always ahead, winning it 6-4.
Jack and Ben list the first set 6-4, even after leading 3-0 but were terrific to comeback and win the second set after a few changes were made, winning it 6-3. The third set was a struggle though as Ben and Jack began the set a little off and struggled to regain the momentum which they had at the end of the second set, losing the set 6-1.
With 2 matches left, including one being against top of the ladder, they become crucial in trying to get a top 2 spot and a home final.
- Ben Pollak
