Round 11 Winter - 20 July 2019

In Round 11, there was sunshine (after two weeks of washouts).  Basking in that sunshine were two Maccabi teams.  The other five teams lost (the Grade 7 teams lost by one game and by two games respectively in heartbreaking fashion).  There was also a welcome return for young gun Joey Pat, who played his first match since returning from travelling abroad.

TENNIS VICTORIA WINTER PENNANT:

Grade 3 Beaumaris 3-6-44 def Maccabi 1-2-32

Geoff Rosenberger 2-6 1-6

Saul Muscatel 4-6 5-7

Damon Flicker 4-6 6-4 2-6

Marcus Frajman 2-6 5-7

We went in to the game knowing we were playing a strong team.  With the same lineup, we gave them a great fight in doubles so we thought we would be a good chance on our home courts.  It wasn't to be as we went home without any rubbers.  Only Damon won a set.  Geoff's opponent is a hard hitting player and made it difficult.  We have three more matches to try and ensure a top 2 finish.

Alan Datt 6-4 5-7 6-1

It was great to have no rain for a change and be back out on court.  The team travelled to Vermont South (Holy Saviour Tennis Club, who were 4th on the ladder).  We had a very full enjoyable afternoon’s tennis.  All 4 matches went the distance.  It was a very good thing that we had 4 courts otherwise we would still be out there.  The afternoon ended at 4.30pm.  Unfortunately we had another very close loss, losing by 2 games.

Grade 9 Maccabi 4-8-56 def Monash Uni 0-2-34

Ben Pollak 6-4 6-2

Daniel Goodrich 6-1 2-6 6-2

Doron Livshitz 5-7 6-3 6-3

Jack Stock 7-5 6-2

We began the day off knowing it’ll be a tough day, given we were missing our spiritual leader in Joel, but overall it did seem. The day started off with Daniel, Doron and Jack all on court while Ben waited on the sidelines for a bit.
Daniel started on fire, won the first set 6-1 in no time, playing really consistent and his serve was on. Although he lost concentration in the second set and made a few errors, he lost it 6-2, however momentum swung back his way again as he took the 3rd set similarly to the first, 6-2.
Doron was in a real tussle in the first set, the most competitive set of the day, and although he Struggled with the wind early and lost the set, he managed to regain control and composure and took the next 2 sets 6-3.
Just returning from Mexico a few days earlier, where he did Australia and Maccabi proud in the Pan-American Games, Jack was a little off early, going down 5-1 in the first set, however his fighting spirit took over, and even after saving multiple set points, he won the first set 7-5. Early in the 2nd set Jack knew he was well on top and the scoreboard showed, winning it 6-2.
Ben was on court last, and the wait on the sidelines had no effect as he raced to a 4-0 lead, although his opponent came back to get it to 5-4, Ben ended up winning it 6-4. The second set started off in a very similar fashion, as Ben led 3-0, after coming back from 15-40 down at 3-1, Ben knew he had broken his opponent’s spirit and won the set 6-2.
Overall, it was a great team performance as all of us performed at a really good standard, with the spiritual leader again out next week, the same 4 players will have to perform well again in doubles next week too.
