Grade 3 Maccabi 2-6-47 def MCC Glen Iris 2-5-51

Nick Hornstein 6-2 6-3

Max Needleman 7-6 2-6 1-6

Joel Fredman 3-6 6-3 1-6

Robert Minc 6-4 3-6 6-3

The grade 3 team scored a narrow 1 set victory in their third match of the season, cementing a spot in the top four of the section.
In his Maccabi pennant debut, former kiwi superstar Nick Hornstein had a convincing straight sets victory at no. 1, clinically disposing of his opponent with strong ground strokes on both sides.
Rob Minc started on court 2, playing at no. 4, demolishing his opponent in the first set in similar fashion to Nick. However, his opponents big forehand started to find the lines more frequently in the second, sending the match into a third set. The power, athleticism, and agility of Minc showed through in the third for a strong win, leading to rumours that he may be moved higher up the team order.
Joel Fredman and Max Needleman were next on court. Max held on in a tight first set marathon tie break tussle before going down in 3 long sets, finishing under lights at around midnight. Joel dropped the first, lifted his game to take the second, winning the crucial deciding set for the day, before running out of gas in the third.
With Asaf, Jesse and Steve available for selection next week, the pressure is on everyone to retain their spots.

Grade 6 Maccabi 4-8-49 def Donvale 0-0-21

Geoff Rosenberger 6-3 6-0

Saul Muscatel 7-6 6-1

Marcus Frajman 6-3 6-0

Ryan Behr 6-4 6-4

Not much to say.  The quality of the opposition was slightly underwhelming.  Having said that, you still have to play well and focus on your own game. All four players did that and recorded straight sets wins.  On to next week.

Grade 7 Section 2 Templestowe Park 2-5-44 def Maccabi 2-4-41

David Zulman 4-6 4-6

Adam Klein 7-5 4-6 6-3

Zvi Schweitzer 2-6 2-6

Ron Schweitzer 6-4 6-2

All four players went on, all players were competitive.  David played against the Victorian Penant player of the year and went down in a close tussle;  Adam keeps improving, winning a close tussle;  Zvi not quite on his game today, probably a tad more practice wouldn’t go astray, and Ron was steady in his win against an opponent about half his age.
- Ron Schweitzer

Grade 9 Maccabi 4-8-49 def Oakleigh 0-0-24

Ben Pollak 6-4 6-3

Daniel Goodrich 6-3 7-6

Paul Koltun 6-1 6-4

Michael Rabinovich 6-2 6-1

First away trip (on Oakliegh's new mod-grass courts), Ben, Daniel, Paul Koltun and Michael took to the 4 available courts.
Ben started nervously as he got broken to love (lost 8 of the 10 first points), before finding his rhythm on his serve to hold every time thereafter. Ben was also aced a few times early before finding his range on returns as he played well on the mod-grass courts for a 6-4, 6-3 win.
Daniel played a defensive player (and down a break 3-2) before he stepped it up to win the opening set 6-3, followed by a 3-1 lead. Unfortunately unforced errors slowly crept in, allowing his opponent to gain momentum and get it to a tiebreak. Daniel ended up doing enough to win the tie-break 7-5.
Paul continued the trend of winning in straight sets winning 6-1, 6-4.
Michael was serving well (with aces) which allowed him to get ontop. There were some good rallies and standard of play for a number 4 match, with Michael prevailing 6-2, 6-1.
Overall: Good team performance to kick-start our season. Although I get the feeling that having a few team members miss tennis for the footy spurred on a few team-members to get the win!
