2 March 2019 - Summer Semi Finals

Two of Maccabi's eight adult teams were involved in finals action yesterday in the Bayside Regional Tennis Association (BRTA) Summer competition.  The stakes were high as a win would secure passage to the Grand Final, while defeat meant instant elimination.  The semi finals were played on a day where the maximum temperature was 37C.

The Section 5 team of Geoff Rosenberger, Saul Muscatel, Damon Flicker, Marcus Frajman, Ryan Sharp and Ryan Behr were victorious, winning 4 rubbers to 1 over Mountain Gate.  They will play Beaumaris in the Grand Final on Saturday March 16 at 1pm at Dendy Park TC, Brighton.

The Section 6 team of Leor Bar, David Zulman, Jordan Jaffe, Marty Schwarz, Errol Dorfan and Alan Liebowitz were 3 rubbers apiece with Langwarrin but fell agonisingly short, losing by a set.

Section 5 Maccabi 4-6-49 def Mountain Gate 1-2-38

Geoff Rosenberger 8-0

Saul Muscatel 8-5

Marcus Frajman 8-7 (7-2)

Ryan Sharp 2-8

Damon Flicker/Ryan Sharp 4-6 6-4 0-1

Geoff Rosenberger/Ryan Behr 7-5 6-1

Geoff produced a truly remarkable result against a worthy opponent, winning 8-0.  It is impressive to win a match 8-0 but to do so against the other team's best player and in a final is incredible.  It would have to be one of Geoff's best performances in a Maccabi shirt.
Saul played smart tennis against a fiery and noisy player, winning 8-5.  Saul has made a few changes to his game in the last year - this takes time to implement and we are seeing the results.  He will take confidence from this.
Marcus' match was the last to finish, winning in a tiebreak 8-7.  After trailing 3-1, Marcus lifted and took a 4-3 lead but couldn't consolidate.  The match ebbed and flowed after this and both players were nervous.  Marcus simply made less errors than his opponent at vital moments to take the rubber.
Ryan S has been in sparkling form since joining the Club last year but it was not his day, losing 8-2.  Ryan's usual consistency was a bit off as he suffered his first singles loss for Maccabi against a powerful opponent.  However, we all are big believers in Sharpie and know he will bounce back.
We went into the doubles, needing just one rubber.  But this was not going to be simple and Geoff and Ryan Behr found themselves down 4-1 in the first set.  At the same time, Damon and Ryan Sharp narrowly lost the first set.  Geoff and Ryan B then won the last four games from 3-5 down in the first set, through some inspired lobbing and netplay.  This was important psychologically.
Damon and Ryan S turned it around in the second set and were up 4-1.  They eventually won the set 6-4, which was also a good confidence booster.  A short time later, Geoff and Ryan B wrapped up the second set 6-1 to win the day for our team.
Now we have two weeks to prepare for the Grand Final

Section 6 Langwarrin 3-5-46 def Maccabi 3-4-36

David Zulman 8-3
Jordan Jaffe 8-3
Marty Schwarz 3-8
Alan Liebowitz 4-8
Jordan Jaffe/Marty Schwarz 7-6 0-6 10-6
Errol Dorfan/Alan Liebowitz 2-6 1-6

After finishing 3rd we were up against a 2nd placed Langwarrin on a hot day.
David made amends for a previous defeat against the Langwarrin number 1 with his forehand controlling the match.
Likewise, Jordan was hitting cleanly and won comfortably.
Marty came up against an opponent in the form of life, hitting the lines on most of his serves and groundstrokes.
Playing on en tout cas, Alan was out of his comfort zone having almost exclusively played on hard court all season.
The doubles was where Langwarrin had the edge over us. Their number 1 pair were ruthless and barely missed a volley or overhead while the number 2 pair played better than they had all year.
Overall we had an excellent season. It was great to make finals especially since we had the majority of our team away for a month at the end of 2018.
