23 February 2019 - Round 14 Summer

In the final round of the BRTA Summer home and away season, four teams won (including one forfeit) and four teams lost.

Semi finals will be played next weekend.  Two Maccabi teams will be involved and we wish them the best of luck:

  • The Section 5 team of Geoff RosenbergerSaul Muscatel, Damon Flicker, Marcus Frajman, Ryan Sharp and Ryan Behr finished on top of the ladder and will likely play Carmelite for a place in the Grand Final.
  • The Section 6 team of Leor Bar, David Zulman, Jordan Jaffe, Marty Schwarz, Errol Dorfan and Alan Liebowitz will finish 2nd or 3rd on the ladder.

For all other players, teams have to be lodged for the Winter competition ASAP (which starts in late April and goes through to August/September).  If there is a change to your availability for Winter competition or you are not intending to play, please notify your captain or Adam Needleman ASAP.

WOMEN:

Section 2 Monash University 3-4-38 def Maccabi 3-4-37

Mor Dahan 8-6

Lauren Yarrow 8-2

Nicole Cukierman 1-8

Gabi Bergman 3-8

Dahan/Yarrow 6-1 6-1

Cukierman/Bergman 1-6 4-6

We played the bottom team (Monash University) and believed we had a good chance! We put up a fight despite them  having two decent fill ins but in the end it came down to points and unfortunately only lost by a point! Hopefully the next season to come will be a different result but was a great effort being in a tough section!
- Lauren Yarrow

MEN:

Section 1 Carmelite 5-7-55 def Maccabi 1-2-41

Arthur Kaganovitch 8-2

Max Needleman 4-8

Steven Gostin 4-8

Marcus Frajman 2-8

Kaganovitch/Needleman 6-3 5-7 6-7

Gostin/Frajman 3-6 3-6

Arthur played extremely well and we hope this wasn't his last match for Maccabi.  Max and Steven the machine (who played in the morning and later on Saturday evening in the Kooyong Club Championships) had chances but couldn't take them.  Marcus was on the defensive in most rallies, which made it tough.  In the doubles, both pairs played reasonably well and gave a good account of themselves.  There were some great rallies but in the end, it was a 5-1 defeat.
- Marcus Frajman

Section 5 Maccabi No 2 4-5-42 def OLGC 2-3-35
Steven Kleytman 4-8 ( up 4-1 against a gun before doing his weekly injury )
Jan Tenenberg 8-3 ( simply outstanding today. He played smart. Can you believe that ! )
Adam Needleman 8-4 ( out ran a rabbit in a low standard spectacle )
David Kenley 8-1 ( played a boy that looked old enough to be his grandson . Simply too good )
Tenenberg/Needleman 1-6 1-6 ( surprisingly we played well despite the scores. The other pair
consisting of 2 giants, had massive serves and were just too good )
Kleytman/Kenley 6-4 6-3 ( Steered us to victory as was the intended plan )

Good to play away from home with the same guys for the second week in a row with no emergencies! This consistency and ability to fill a team from our list cost us badly early on in the year. Last week we showed we can match it with the top teams . Today was pleasing because we reproduced the good form of last week , to claim a good win and move another spot up the ladder .
The definite highlight was Jan beating a very good player and making it look easy. I did not even hear Jan complain after a bad shot. He is now known as “Next point “ Tenenberg.

Section 5 Maccabi No 1 def Carmelite W/O

Section 6 Maccabi 6-8-56 def Monash University 0-0-20

Leor Bar 8-3

Jordan Jaffe 8-4

Marty Schwarz 8-3

Errol Dorfan 8-0

Jaffe/Schwarz 6-1 6-4

Bar/Dorfan 6-2, 6-3

The Maccabi section 6 team had a massive win away from home today.  This was required to secure a second or third spot finish on the ladder.  Well done to the team who stayed focussed and delivered all the points.
- Errol Dorfan

Section 7 Dendy Park 6-8-56 def Maccabi 0-0-15

Ron Schweitzer 3-8

Paul Koltun 3-8

Daniel Vertes 3-8

Jesse Wilson 0-8

Schweitzer/Wilson 3-6 0-6

Koltun/Vertes 2-6 1-6

The last game of the season shaped up as being a tough one with our top 3 out, playing against a team trying to make the finals.  And so it proved to be.  The four singles players all went on together and whilst they tried hard, playing up a few positions just made the task a bridge too far.  As it proved to be in the doubles.
A poor end to a season which started with so much promise.  Unfortunately we just couldn’t get our best team on the park for enough weeks;  when we did we were very competitive.
A big thank you to Jesse who travelled all the way from Doncaster to help out our team.  He didn’t win many games on the day, but he showed lots of spirit and said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
Already looking forward to next season.

Section 8 Maccabi 5-7-58 def Highmoor Uniting 1-2-39
Ben Pollak 8-3
Joel Rabinov 8-2
Ron Kotev 8-6
Jack Stock 8-4
Joel/ Ron 6-3, 7-6
Ben/ Jack 4-6, 6-3, 3-6.

In the relaxed atmosphere in a dead rubber match against Highmoor Uniiting (that decided 6th and 7th), Joel and Ron opened proceedings.
Joel served well (as well as returning well) along with the opponent hitting numerous unforced errors for a 8-2 win.
Ron was in a battle at 2all before stepping up for a 5-2 lead, before finishing it off 8-6.
Ben played his best singles match of the season, including hitting 2 aces for a 7-1 lead, before closing it out 8-3.
Jack hit 4 unforced errors in the opening game, before playing his way and hitting some good forehands cross court along with some volleys for a 8-4 win,
Ron and Joel played well for a 6-3 lead. They didn't play as well in the 2nd set, and with the likelihood of a 3rd set (down 5-3) they got back into the set and won the 2nd set in a tiebreak. Ben and Jack played a frustrating opening set (4-6). They then played well for a 3-0 and had it under control for 6-3. Again they had 3-0, however didn't extend that lead as they lost the last 6 games.
Overall: Good to end the season on a high, with this our most complete performance (only time winning all 4 singles matches). Think we all learnt some things this season and have some things that we can work on (over this two month break). Good to see some positives- I don't think at the start of the season Jack would have imagined only dropping serve once in the opening 2 and a bit sets of tennis! But we all have a fair bit of work to do before winter pennant.
- Joel Rabinov

Needleman/Strunin 2-6 3-6
