24 November 2018 - Round 7 Summer

Two of the Club's best under 18 talents: Section 6 superstars Jordan Jaffe and Marty Schwarz

In Round 7 of competition, four out of seven Maccabi teams were victorious.

A special mention to our Section 1 team, captained by Steven Gostin, who recorded their first win of the season. The standard in Section 1 is extremely good and although winning is not everything, it is great to see these guys getting some reward for effort.

At the halfway mark of the season, all teams can have a better understanding of where they stand. There are three more matches to be played in December before the six week mid season break.

Section 1 Maccabi 4-6-53 def Carmelite 2-2-39

Asaf Nagar 7-8

Joey Pat 5-8

Joel Fredman 8-5

Steven Gostin 8-2

Nagar/Fredman 7-6 6-4

Pat/Gostin 6-3 6-3

We did it!! We broke thru for  a win !!!
Asaf playing on 2 hours sleep due to a noisy pregnant partner played a high quality match and led 7/5 and serving for the  match but just couldn’t maintain his level shown to get the break eventually going down 7/8
Joel struck the ball so well against a fitness freak driving him crazy with his early striking of the ball and deft volleying to win 8/5
Joey played a big serving monster and really struck  the ball  well in a high quality match but just close it out going down 6/8
Steven played really solid tennis to grind out a good win 8/2
Joel/ asaf races out to a 5/1 lead with superb volleying but inexplicably started to make some errors and found themselves down 5/6 before rallying to win in a tiebreaker 7/6 and then closing out the match 6/4 again with some deft volleying by both boys
Joey/Steven played unbelievably solid doubles volleying when required lobbing when required and driving down the middle when required to win
6/3 6/3
Great win for the day!!

Section 5 OLGC 4-5-38 def Maccabi No 2 2-3-41

Jan Tenenberg 6-8

Adam Needleman 5-8

David Kenley 6-8

Darren Seymour 8-1

Kenley/Seymour 3-6 1-6

Tenenberg/Needleman 6-0 6-1

We wanted to get our third win in a row and move into the half way stage with momentum after a very poor start to the year with player unavailability’s . The wind blew our hopes away and we were edged out in a very close encounter. Jan was in great form and Darren went through his opponent mercilessly. However, not enough by the team overall today.  We have definitely closed the gap after winning only two rubbers in our first four clashes. The finals are probably beyond us but I think we will do some damage and all our opponents will be wary playing us in the second half of the season.

Section 5 Maccabi No 1 5-7-58 def Carmelite 1-2-38

Damon Flicker 4-8

Marcus Frajman 8-7

Ryan Sharp 8-0

Ryan Behr 8-3

Flicker/Sharp 5-7 6-3 7-6

Frajman/Behr 6-1 6-3

A pleasing win for our team. It was 1st on the ladder against 2nd and we were without our top two players. The depth in our squad was on display as we all performed well on the day. Damon and Marcus had the closest singles matches, which left us one rubber apiece. Ryan S was dominant, obliterating his opponent. Ryan B, who had not touched his racquet after travel overseas, played the conditions well.  We won both doubles rubbers with a late flurry - Damon and Ryan S coming back from 4-1 down in the deciding set to win and Marcus/Ryan B coming back from 3-1 down to ensure a straight sets win.

Section 6 Maccabi 5-7-57 def Monash Uni 1-2-20

Leor Bar 7-8

Jordan Jaffe 8-1

Marty Schwarz 8-1

Errol Dorfan 8-0

Jaffe/Schwarz 6-1 6-0

Bar/Dorfan 2-6 6-2 6-1

On a windy afternoon the Section 6 team took to the court.
Marty and Errol played first. Each did not have too hard a time dismantling their opponent. Errol yet again took another 8-0 victory; Marty won 8-1. Similarly, Jordan cracked his opponent, taking an 8-1 victory. Despite a strong effort and a tight tie-breaker, Leor was unable to close out the match, going down 7-8.
In the doubles, Jordan and Marty did not take long to gain some momentum. From there, they did not lose a game, winning 6-1 6-0. On the adjacent court, Leor and Errol had a harder time. They started tentatively, losing the first 2-6. However, they fought valiantly, winning the next two sets 6-2 6-1.
Overall a strong win for the Section 6 team. We are still looking for emergencies on the 8th and 15th of December...
- Marty Schwarz

Section 7 Dendy Park 5-7-58 def Maccabi 1-2-43

Johnson Duong  3-8
Zvi Schweitzer   6-8
Alan Datt  8-7
Paul Koltun  3-8
Johnson & Zvi  6-7, 2-6
Alan & Paul  5-7, 6-1, 4-6

A very disappointing day at the office, up against the team one rung below us on the ladder, in a must win match, we lost the crucial points / games we had to win and only came away with the one point.  This is going to make it very difficult for us to make the finals.
Alan and Paul took to the courts first.  As is Alan’s way, with his difficult serve and net rushing he was able to unsettle his opponent and record a solid win; meanwhile Paul was up against a very solid hitter and was just not able to make headway.  Johnson and Zvi then took to the courts, both having long games.  Johnson was a bit rusty it being only his second match in 4 months.  Nonetheless he was involved in long rallies, unfortunately too often on the wrong end of those rallies;  meanwhile Zvi managed to sneak ahead in his match leading 5-4 but his opponent just steadied a bit more at the finishing line.
Needing to win both doubles to get the points, both teams gave it their all, with neither able to get over the line.  Johnson and Zvi were ahead in the tiebreak in the first set but were just not able to take it;  Alan and Paul actually won more games than their opponents - 15 compared with 14 - but also were not able to get over the line, losing in three sets.
So after knocking off the top team last week, we fell to the sixth team!

Section 8 Maccabi 4-5-55 def Highmoor 2-4-40

Ben Pollak 8-4

Joel Rabinov 5-8

Daniel Goodrich 8-0

Jordan Davis 8-1

Rabinov/Davis 6-7 2-6

Pollak/Goodrich 6-3 6-7 6-4

Due to the overnight (and morning) rain we opted for doubles first at Highmoor Uniting.
For Joel and Jordan things looked good at 3-2, 15-40 for a break, before both missed a volley before losing the set in a tiebreak. Down 3-2 the opposition put the foot down for 6-2.
Ben and Daniel started on fire, early in the set they won 14 straight points! They took the opening set 6-3 before the opponents lifted their serve big time taking the 2nd set in a tiebreak. The 3rd set was very pleasing, winning it 6-4 after regaining concentration and removing the frustration of losing the second set.
Joel quickly found his way down 7-0 (with a combination of the opponent not missing a thing, along with Joel having to hit 4 perfect shots just to win a point). Bizarrely Joel somehow played in the longest singles match of the day and put some creditability on the scoreboard saving numerous match points before a 5-8 score line.
Daniel dominated from start to finish to win 8-0.
Jordan put in a very good performance for a 8-1 win.
Ben's match started even at 1all but once Ben got a huge break of serve in the 3rd game, his confidence grew and played very well as he took a 7-2 lead. There were a few nervous moments trying to close the match but Ben finished it 8-4 in one of his most complete performances for the season and completing a victory for the team.
Overall: Good to get a win for many reasons. At the completion of my singles I knew we were in a good position as all 3 other singles all had handy leads of 5-0 or 5-1. This win puts us back in the top 5 (possibly 4th depending on results) as we try to gain some real momentum in the 2nd half of the season as we aim for back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
- Joel Rabinov

Section 9 MCC Glen Iris 3-4-36 def Maccabi 3-4-30

Josh Duieb 0-8

Paul Kovacs 8-2

Josh Dorfan 0-8

Lachie Zuker 8-2

Duieb/Kovacs 6-1 6-3

Dorfan/Zuker 1-6 1-6

No close matches but a very close result. Great effort from the team. Paul continued his unbeaten run in singles. Thanks to Lachie for filling in at late notice and had a great win in singles.
