Section 1 Royal South Yarra 6-8-61 def Maccabi 0-1-35

Asaf Nagar 6-8

Max Needleman 5-8

Robert Minc 2-8

Steven Gostin 4-8

Nagar/Needleman 6-4 2-6 6-7

Minc/Gostin 1-6 3-6

Beautiful day at the office!!
However we were outgunned
Asaf back from overseas picked up the racquet for the first time in a while and it showed missing backhand shots he wouldn’t miss in his sleep!!
He fought hard though and at 5/6 down 0/40 u would have thought a break back was on but alas lack of match play showed and Asaf list 5/8
Max played so well in his first 3 games leading 3/1 with deft drop shots lobs good driving backhands but max just couldn’t maintain the rage and his opponent lifted while max started to miss shots and making wrong shot selections eventually going down 5/8
Rob tried hard a gst a young opponent with a big forehand going down 2/8
Steven played a huge serving leftie who just didn’t miss his first serve but fought hard going down 4/8
In the doubles max/Asaf combined well to take the first set 6/4 but just couldn’t maintain their consistent play losing the second 2/6
They then played a super tiebreak but again missed volleys and shots they shouldn’t have losing it 5/10
Rob/Steve played two big serving guys but won their fair share of points and games going down 1&3

Section 5 Carmelite 4-5-49 def Maccabi No 2 2-3-41

Steven Kleytman 5-8

Section 5 OLGC 3-5-48 def Maccabi No 1 3-4-45

Geoff Rosenberger 3-8

Marcus Frajman 8-1

Ryan Sharp 8-3

Ryan Behr 8-7

Frajman/Sharp 2-6 3-6

Rosenberger/Behr 2-6 6-4 5-7

It was essentially a reversal of last week, where a 3-1 singles lead was overturned.  Today we won three out of four singles rubbers.  Ryan S continued his sparkling form and Marcus quickly made it first to 8 games.  Meanwhile, Maccabi number one Geoff was up against a very powerful player and poor serving probably deprived Geoff of an opportunity to apply more scoreboard pressure.  Ryan B saved two match points, down 5-7 before working his way back and winning the tiebreak, in front of his teammates.
Onto the doubles and we knew the opposition #1 would be a handful. Marcus and Ryan S tried but were overpowered. We had to win the second doubles rubber and depite losing the first set, things were looking good when Geoff and Ryan B clinched the second and took a 3-1 lead in the final set. But the opposition took the initiative and stole victory from us in an enjoyable afternoon of tennis.

Section 6 Maccabi 4-5-44 def St Pat's Mentone 2-3-28

Leor Bar 2-8

David Zulman 8-1

Jordan Jaffe 8-2

Marty Schwarz 8-2

Bar/Zulman 4-6 2-6

Jaffe/Schwarz 6-1 6-2

A great day for tennis. Leor played a solid opponent and went down. David won in an eventual match where his opponent ran into and broke the net, while Jordan and Marty also won comfortably.
In doubles, Jordan and Marty played well and ensured we won on the day

Section 7 Mordialloc 5-7-50 def Maccabi 1-2-29
Zvi Schweitzer 5-8
Ron Schweitzer 6-8
Paul Koltun  8-2
Daniel Vertes  2-8
Zvi and Ron  0-6, 6-0, 0-6
Paul and Daniel 2-6, 0-6.

On a beautiful day for tennis we headed to down town Mordiallic with all four players taking to the courts.  Zvi and Ron were involved in tight struggles, both ahead early but losing their way at the latter stages of the match to both go down in close games.  Meanwhile Paul continued on his merry way, not giving his opponent an inch (or centimetre), while Daniel discovered that section 7 can be tough, not to be suckered in by his easy victory last week.
So 1-3 down after the singles, still a chance given last week both pairs won their doubles, but also knowing how Maccabi are notoriously poor at doubles.  Still, we entered the doubles full of hope.
But it was not to be.  Zvi and Ron had a crazy match - it’s not often there is a best of 3 sets match which goes to 3 sets and only 18 games are played!  Nobody can really work out how it all happened.  On the other court, Paul and Daniel weren’t able to continue their good work from last week.
Next week we will hopefully bolstered by our numbers 1 and 3 making their debut for the team.  That will be nice.
- Ron Schweitzer

Section 8 East Malvern 4-6-45 def Maccabi 2-2-29

Ben Pollak 8-5

Joel Rabinov 8-0

Miguel Donnenfeld 5-8

Josh Hutson 0-8

Rabinov/Donnenfeld 4-6 2-6

Pollak/Hutson 0-6 2-6

With the team being decimated due to unavailability, we had to use 2 emergencies (Miguel Donnenfeld and Josh Hutson). Ben and Miguel opened proceedings.
Ben got off to a perfect start, leading 2-0 and then consolidated the lead throughout the match. Despite being broken at 5-2, Ben broke straight back and led 7-3 before finally holding his nerve to win 8-5 in a almost complete performance.
Miguel played in a tight match with scores locked at 3all before his opponent got on a roll for 6-3. Miguel fought back for 5-6 before losing 5-8.
Josh got outplayed everywhere as his opponent won 8-0.
Joel raced out to a 3-0 lead before being made to work hard for it. Was probably the hardest match for a 8-0 win!
Joel and Miguel just couldn't get ahead in the first set and were just one or two points away in quite a few games, losing the opening set 4-6. The 2nd set the opponents gained confidence as they turned a 1-0 deficit into 5-1 before winning 6-2.
Ben and Josh struggled throughout the match, although they can take heart from playing a lot better in the second set and really should’ve been closer than the 0-6,2-6 result.
Overall; A day where we all learnt a bit. Josh learnt the hard way about singles and doubles, Miguel and I just couldn't take our small chances and Ben knows he can play at 1.  Not quite sure where we sit in our section: Over the first two weeks we played probably the bottom side and a side that will be the benchmark in doubles. Hopefully the next couple of rounds we can get into a rhythm as we settle the team down a bit.
- Joel Rabinov
