28 July 2018 - Round 13 Winter

In a strong weekend of results, six out of nine Maccabi teams won.

TENNIS VICTORIA WINTER PENNANT (MEN):

Grade 2 Mountain Gate 3-6-47 def Maccabi 1-4-44

Arthur Kaganovitch 4-6 4-6

Asaf Nagar 6-3 6-1

Joey Pat 6-7 6-4 1-6

Max Needleman 6-2 2-6 3-6

Grade 4 Maccabi 3-6-42 def Eaglemont 1-3-32

Joel Fredman 6-3 0-6 7-5

Robert Minc 6-3 6-3

Ari Berman 1-6 4-6

Saul Muscatel 6-0 6-0 W/O

Grade 4 had a nice win on Saturday against Eaglemont. Unfortunately Saul Muscatel’s opponent did not show so he had a stirring 6-0,6-0 victory.
Joel Fredman played his usual flat shot game with eventually spooked his opposition and he won 6-3, 0-6,7-5. His mind was elsewhere in the second set!
In what has been described as a clinical display, Rob Minc was able to win 6-3,6-3.

Grade 7 Section 4 Maccabi 3-7-51 def Overport Park 1-2-33

Jan Tenenberg 7-6 4-6 4-6
Steven Kleytman 6-1 6-3
Adam Needleman 6-3 6-4
Darren Seymour 6-2 6-2

The match was important for both teams. The two teams were equal on points and  in  3rd and 4th place . The 5th team is  only 10 points behind both of us. As to be expected in such a vital contest, both teams played their best four . The Maccabi boys knew that the home courts are a massive advantage for us. Our team played as well as we have done all season and got a very much deserved win that should guarantee us a finals spot. A great result considering that we lost our first two matches for the year. I am hoping our guys can practice and train so we give a good account of ourselves in the finals as who knows when we will get another chance.

Grade 7 Section 2 Maccabi 2-4-30 def Box Hill 2-4-28

Marcus Frajman 4-6 2-6

Ryan Sharp 6-2 6-1

David Zulman 6-0 6-1

Mark Lazarovits 0-6 0-6

With a bye next week, this was our last match before finals.  Frustratingly, the opposition did not have access to the clubhouse or courts so we did not begin playing start the matches until almost 145pm, although we did have four courts.  Emergency Mark ran into a talented junior.  Marcus didn't have his best day.  Ryan S and David were clinical and won the day for our team. We are looking forward to continuing our strong form at Home in two weeks.

Grade 8 Section 1 Maccabi 2-5-42 def Narre Warren 2-4-37

Leor Bar 0-6 2-6

Jordan Jaffe 6-3 4-6 6-7

Marty Schwarz 6-4 6-3

Errol Dorfan 6-1 6-1

Another long schlep again for the four of us away to Narre Warren, but a successful outing with a Maccabi win.  With only 2 courts available and Jordan and Marty kicking off their singles in tight contests (Jordan more than Marty), it was a long wait watching for Leor and Errol.   Leor and Errol though, once on court, made sure that they finished quickly so as avoid another late drive home in the dark (like last week from Donvale).  Errol and Marty won in straight sets, whilst Jordan lost in a third set tiebreak, his first set enough to ensure the win for Maccabi on the day.
- Errol Dorfan

Grade 8 Section 2 Maccabi 3-6-52 def East Malvern 1-4-36

Joel Rabinov 6-3 6-7 6-0

Ben Pollak 6-3 6-0

Miguel Donnefeld 3-6 4-6

Jack Eydlish 6-4 3-6 6-1

With our team being decimated on Friday morning, we had to find 2 emergencies to fill in. Thank you for Miguel and Jack for being available at short notice (both of whom haven't played winter pennant for at least 12 months). Away at East Malvern, we had 4 courts available.
Ben was on serve at 2-3, 15all when his opponent pinged a hamstring and had to forfeit what was a close contest up until that point.
Miguel had a tough one with the opponent too good, going down 3-6, 4-6.
Joel won the opening set 6-3, before a tussle in the 2nd set. With the set going to a tiebreak, the opponent prevailed before he just disappeared by giving numerous unforced errors in the final set for Joel to win it 6-0.
Jack had a great start winning the opening set 6-4. He then took the foot off the pedal in the 2nd set losing 6-3. In the final set, numerous long rallies ensued with Jack getting on top and prevailing 6-1.
Overall: Great to finally get a win. Thank you for Miguel and Jack for filling it. This result now gives us a chance to finish the season on a high and hopefully finish in 6th place if we can get a win next week.
