PPA Family Day enjoyed by all and sundry

Paul Platus smashes one for the PPA XI against the U21 Colts XI

Despite intermittent rain that threatened mid-afternoon, the ninth annual Silver ARC PPA Family Day was a huge success, with players and supporters enjoying the festivities.

The day was highlighted by a special presentation to the club's latest Life Members - Paul Fink, Jeff Israel and Joel Beebe - during the lunch break, a Milo In2Cricket program for kids, and the club also launched an initiate with the Bendigo Bank who were on hand on the day supporting the club with marquees, banners and information.

Club President Leon Jacobs was absolutely thrilled with how the whole day panned out.

"This day has been running for nine years now  and it continues to go from strength to strength and provide a great way to bring together all parts of the club community - ranging from kids, juniors, current and players and of course their families," Jacobs said.

"Although the rooms were overflowing at lunchtime, it was a great problem for the club to have with so many old and young faces around."

The main match took place in the afternoon between a Past Players Association (PPA) XI against an Under 21 Colts XI featuring several promising youngsters playing at both club and district level.

The PPA XI won the toss and batted first in the 30-over per side contest, whereupon Under 15 bowler Adam Kahlberg captured the first two of his three impressive wickets in a fantastic opening spell, dismissing openers Danny Klinger and Paul Platus in quick time.

Sam Frey (16) and Daniel Onas (34) steadied the ship for the old boys, before Leon Jacobs (34) batted with the tail to help the side to a defendable total of 8/126. Clinton Bricker (2/36) was the only other multiple wicket-taker for the Colts.

A devastatating opening spell from PPA XI opening paceman Garry Litinsky put the Colts on the back foot right from the start of their innings, with 'The Big Russian' dismissing Colts skipper Rowan Bricker for 6 as well as the prize scalps of Theodore Rosenthal and Jordan Klotnick.

A quick-fire 29 from Mark Shnider, and 16 runs from Clinton Brikcker, were not enough to stop the momentum of the PPA XI, who bowled consistently well to eventually dismiss the Colts for 73. Matthew Aubor (2/12) and Shawne Rubinstein (2/7) were the other main contributors with the ball.

The earlier match was a highly enjoyable affair, with two teams competing for the Harris-Burman Cup and dusting off the cobwebs for a game of T20 cricket. Typically the Harris-Burman Cup - named after Ron Harris and Phil Burman - pits an old AJAX Cricket Club XI against an old Northern Maccabi Cricket Club XI.

This year's match had a a twist, though, with both Harris and Burman teaming up together on the same side -  in fact 6 of the 12 players in their side were either Burmans or Harris', with Ron being joined by sons David, Josh and Toby, and Phil joined by his son Adam.

Their side was pitted against a Jeff Israel-captained XI, who batted first and knocked up 9/112 runs from their 20 overs, with Josh Gelfand (31*) anchoring the innnings and receiving support from Brad Abrahams (21) while Adam Burman (3/21) was the pick of the bowlers.

In reply, the Harris-Burman XI started well with opener Michael Same top-scoring with 29, but extra was the next top-score with 17 as Bronson Ritterman (2/17) and Gelfand (2/8) ensured victory for Israel's troops after restricting the Harris-Burman XI to just 97.

Hershel Herbst, who participated in the Harris-Burman Cup match, was full of praise for the family-friendly atmosphere that pervaded the day.

"The atmosphere, beginning with the early game, was like being with good friends and family," Herbst said.

"Whether it’s the camaraderie, the competitive juices flowing or just the smell of the grass, it was great.

"Seeing the young and fresh faced kids preparing to play, most of them wouldn’t know any of us or the records of the erstwhile club champions, who participated, the turnout for the Milo cricket, the packed pavilion during lunch, is the reason why the community needs this club to grow and be successful."
