Friends Of Maccabi Luncheon 14 May 2018

Posted: 24-May-2018 by Maccabi VIC

Dear Friends of Maccabi

It was wonderful to see so many Friends at the recent Friends of Maccabi Lunch on Monday 14 May.

Mark Klapish did a sterling job once again as MC. Mark’s extraordinary knowledge of the Maccabi community – he is not joking when he says he has a story about everybody - and expertise in engaging the crowd and Guest Speakers was superb.

It was a privilege to have Jemima Montag, Commonwealth Games 20km Racewalk Gold Medal winner join her grandparents Les and Marj Apple at the luncheon and speak of some of the hurdles she faced to get to Gold!

Brian Swersky presented his President’s Award to Friends of Maccabi Committee Member, Howard Kiel who was overseas and unable to attend the recent Maccabi Victoria Awards Evening. Howard has made an outstanding contribution to Friends of Maccabi and Maccabi over many years. He has made a strong ongoing contribution to this group since the late Leon Haskin asked him to take his place on the Committee before he passed away. Outstanding and committed volunteer, Howard brings tables of his peers to Friends of Maccabi functions, visits Friends of Maccabi Members in aged care facilities, been involved in Lawn Bowls and many other clubs over the years and has also recently managed to convince his grandsons to come and play for Maccabi instead of their other clubs.

Danny Lustig also shared an inspirational story of the Cricket Club renaming the Best Clubman award as the Paul Fink Award in honour of his continued life-long service to the club.

Special guest speaker, Timmy Rubin CEO of the Mikvah and Australia's only Jewish female prison chaplain lived up to all expectations as she spoke of comparisons between developing a spiritual strength and a physical strength. Focus, practice and belief. Timmy has helped and changed the lives of so many people and you could hear a pin drop as she shared her inspirational personal journey. She left us with something to think about and a smile on our faces.

We are most grateful to our Event Sponsor - Fella Hamilton, Corporate Table – Jaffe Consulting, Sylvia Gelman AM MBE, Maccabi Victoria Supporters, Scott Winton, Lowe Lippmann, Gandel Philanthropy and Bensons whose ongoing generous support of Maccabi Victoria is most appreciated.

Thank you to Brighton Mazda, Chemist Warehouse, Genesis Fitness Caulfield, Cranbourne Golf Club, Rebel Sport, The Car Wash – Caulfield, Kraus Foods, Australian Jewish News, Our Kitchen Table, Rebel Sport, Continental Kosher Butchers, Classic Cinemas for generously donating the fantastic prizes for our popular raffle.

We are also grateful to Trialia Foods for donating the wine and to Handcrafted Flowers for the stunning table centrepieces and floral arrangement. For those of you who asked about the floral centrepieces on Monday and at past luncheons and are astounded that they are not actually real, Judy, Malcolm and Josh Bulafkin have recently redone their Handcrafted Flowers Showroom in Glenhuntly Road and would love you to come and visit!

And a sincere thank you to the entire Friends of Maccabi Committee – Sylvia Gelman AM MBE, Jill Diamond, Howard Kiel and Mark Klapish for all their hard work and commitment.

Please diarise the next Friends of Maccabi Luncheon which will be held on Monday 29 October. If you have any friends who wish to attend the luncheons or would like to be added to the ‘Friends’ and ‘Macc-Chat e-newsletter’ mailing lists, please email Jacquie their name/s, e-mail address and contact phone number.
