An emotional week ended on a high for AJAX midfielder Chelsea Fisher when she won the Women’s Development Division Three Best and Fairest award.

“I really didn’t expect to win the award and I was quite shocked,” Fisher told the AJN this week.

“I definitely had one of my better seasons, probably my best yet.”

Fisher finished the season with 23 best and fairest votes, four ahead of second place.

She said that throughout the season she had niggling injuries, but her coaches and teammates kept telling her that she was going well.

“I felt that I had improved and picked up more skills and knowledge about the game, but never expected the Best and Fairest.”

Fisher was with her teammates when they were told to put on the radio and listen to the vote-count.

Officials went through week-by-week, like the Brownlow Medal, live on radio and announced the points given to players from each game.

“It was so professional and made me feel really special because they took the time to go through every round and even gave a recap of the games.”

The award ceremony on a Monday night capped off an emotional week because AJAX women’s team was bundled out of the finals by Old Mentonians 5.8(38) – 5.6 (36) on the weekend.

“That is the devastating part of the week – for the second week in a row we lost by two points.”

AJAX finished on top of the table with nine wins but then lost the semi-final to Mazenod by two points and the preliminary final by two points.

In this week’s game, AJAX led at half time by eight points but was then held scoreless in the third quarter while Old Mentonians scored 18 points.

AJAX came back in the final term, but was unable to level the match.

Despite the back-to-back finals losses, Fisher said the team has had a great year.

The club has helped develop a group of new players, while the more experienced women became more passionate and came together well as one team.

“We just became one tight family.  Every Tuesday and Thursday we had social outside of training times.”
