Maccabi Ajax’s 1st XI terrific start to the season has continued after bowling out Highett late on day two for 256, 14 runs short of Maccabi’s first innings total of 270.

The win ensures Maccabi remain undefeated and sit atop of the South A1 ladder.
Melbourne’s early morning weather again caused havoc as a wet and muddy outfield made fielding difficult for the home side.

Alan Goldstein’s early season run in the race for the Ray Saffer Cricketer of the Year continued as he clean bowled both of Highett’s opening batsmen, leaving their opponents in trouble at 2/34.

However, Highett got their innings back on track with a 78 run third wicket partnership. With the match in the balance just after tea, in stepped Maccabi’s captain, David Majtlis who claimed three quick scalps which put the Firsts back in control.

However, another middle order partnership of 76 kept the away side in the hunt at 6/198 before Goldstein broke yet again, claiming his five wicket hall in the process and moving his season wicket tally to nine from two games.

The Firsts eventually bowled out Highett for 256 bringing to an end an exciting game of cricket and leaving Maccabi with two wins from their first two starts.

Following on from a disappointing effort on day one last week, the Seconds again found themselves on the back foot against Highett. The home side finished day one on 5/95, just ten runs short of Maccabi’s first innings total of 105. After eclipsing Maccabi’s total, Highett went on to post 150 for the loss of just seven wickets before their captain declared and sent Maccabi in for a chance at outright victory.

Opener Ben Morley slugged out Highett’s attack as best he could, showing a tremendous amount of concentration and value for his wicket. Future club stars Aaron Fetter (17) and Adam Klein (8) batted beyond their years while JJ. Zimmet (18 not out) helped propel Maccabi to 9/66 off 38.5 overs to ensure the Seconds avoided outright defeat.

The Third’s rounded up the weekends action away against Parkville District on Walker Street Oval. Batting first, the hosts compiled a challenging 156 from 44.4 overs.

Club veterans Daniel Eckhaus (2/20) and Laurie Shneider (2/17) were the best of Maccabi’s bowlers. Unfortunately, Maccabi were never in with a shout as they collapsed to 7/30 and 81 all out. Ari Goldberg (24) was Maccabi’s highest run getter.
