Maccabi Ajax CC celebrated the start of the new season in fine fashion on Sunday as the 1st XI got their season off to a flying start and the brand new facilities at Gary Smorgan Oval 9 were unveiled.

Despite an early morning shower, play for season 2011/2012 got underway as scheduled, and first XI captain David Majtlis won the toss and selected to bowl first against an unfamiliar opponent in RMIT.

In overcast conditions, opening paceman Adam Lubitz was at his accurate best, restricting the opposition with figures of 1 for 8 off 7 overs.

However, 1st XI debutant, Alan Goldstein tore RMIT apart , claiming figures of 4 for 35 from his 13 overs in what was ultimately a match winning performance.

Goldstein was given strong support from Majtlis (3/19 off 6) at the other end as RMIT were bowled out for 100.

In the second innings run chase, Simon Lipschitz and Benji Jones, making his long awaited 1st XI debut, got the Firsts off to a solid start, amassing 59 for the opening partnership.

When Jones (17) was dismissed, Lipschitz continued his assault, eventually falling for a fantastic 73.

Cameo performances from new Hawthorn-Monash recruit Cameron Angus (16) and David Fayman (23 not out) towards the end of the innings propelled the Firsts to 145/3 from their 40 overs capping off a comfortable victory and a fine first outing for the 1st XI.

In other games, the 2nd XI had a bye while the 3rd and Silver Arc 4th XI’s had narrow losses.
