Susan Alberti AC Inspires Standing Ovation at the 10th Anniversary Friends Of Maccabi Luncheon

Posted: 08-Jun-2017 by Maccabi VIC

It was a privilege to hear one of Australia's most inspiring women and an absolute trail blazer in business, medical research, philanthropy and women's football, Dr Susan Alberti AC as the Special Guest Speaker at the 10th Anniversary luncheon held on Monday 29 May.

Susan’s engaging presentation brought on goosebumps and tears to many ahead of a ‘first-time ever’ standing ovation.   Susan was the first woman elevated to AFL corporate level, for years the vice-president of the Western Bulldogs. And she helped energise the AFL Women’s competition into being.

One of the most heartwarming moments was the response of Chelsea Fisher (Captain of our own Jackettes team) to Susan Alberti which truly brought home the impact that Susan’s work has had and will continue to have on so many young women striving to make their mark in sport.  A group of Jackettes was at the Luncheon together with past and present coaches as guests of Event Sponsors, Sharon and David Hamilton, and the opportunity to meet and hear Susan Alberti will no doubt be remembered by them for many years.

Susan was most gracious in taking the time to chat and pose for photos with our ‘friends’ and sponsors throughout the luncheon.

New Friends of Maccabi Committee Member (and Hall of Fame member), Mark Klapish was in great form as he took on his debut MC role, sharing old and new stories with the guests.  Mark welcomed Friends of Maccabi Luncheon Event Sponsors, Sharon and David Hamilton from Fella Hamilton, Maccabi Victoria sponsor, Danny Lustig from Lowe Lippmann and acknowledged all Maccabi Victoria sponsors – Scott Winton, Bensons, and Metricon -  whose ongoing generous support of Maccabi Victoria is most appreciated.

To acknowledge the 10th Anniversary of the Friends of Maccabi Luncheons, Sue Stopar, niece of Sylvia Gelman AM MBE, read a beautiful tribute on behalf of Sylvia who not only founded this wonderful group together with the late Leon Haskin, but is also the only remaining  original Committee Member still on the Committee today. Thank you Sylvia and Sue.

We are also most grateful to all the Raffle supporters Chemist Warehouse, Silverwater Resort – Phillip Island, Genesis Fitness Caulfield, Cranbourne Golf Club, Rebel, the Australian Jewish News, Classic Cinemas Elsternwick, Limors, Ruby’s Gifts, and The Car Wash- Caulfield for kindly providing the fantastic prizes for our popular raffle. We gratefully thank everyone for supporting the raffle by purchasing raffle tickets.

A big thank you also to Leah and Les Kausman who donated a pristine copy of the much sought after Carnival Book to be auctioned at the Luncheon.  After an exciting bidding war, Ian and Yvonne Davis became the proud owners of this treasured book.  A second copy of the book was won by Harry Procel OAM.

A sincere thank you also to Judy and Malcolm Bulafkin of Handcrafted Flowers who continue to make our luncheon venue look fabulous with their generous contribution of the beautiful floral table centrepieces which is most appreciated, to Trialia Foods for generously donating the wines for this luncheon and of course to Unger Catering for the delicious lunch.
