Runs flow for Firsts

Maccabi AJAX’s late-season resurgence continued over the weekend, with the First XI posting a commanding total against Monash University on Sunday.

Top-order half-centuries to Aaron Fetter (53) and Rafael Epstein (52) set the platform before skipper Benji Jones (44*) and Ben Machlin (24*) shared in an unbeaten 65-run stand to lift the Jackas’ score to 5/220 after their 75 overs.

“It was our most complete day we’ve had all season which was really fantastic,” Jones told The AJN.

“Unfortunately, we can’t make the finals so the batting order was a little different to give others an opportunity and everyone really contributed”.

After winning the toss and batting first, Maccabi openers Fetter and Steven Lustig began steadily before the latter was bowled for 15.

This brought Epstein and Fetter together and the pair frustrated the hosts’ attack until after tea.

The 65-run partnership was finally broken when Fetter was caught at slip for an important knock of 53; his second First XI half-century.

Epstein reached his maiden Firsts milestone and then departed for a well-made 52.

Scorecard

Dov Paltiel’s quick-fire 23 pushed the score past 150, before Jones and Machlin came together to lift the Jackas to their highest total of the season, 5/220.

Meanwhile, the Saturday XI continued their impressive run to the finals with an emphatic eight-wicket win over Glen Iris at Eric Raven Reserve.

The Jackas bowled the home side out for 121 courtesy of a brilliant spell by Kane Nissenbaum who claimed career-best figures of 5/16.

Scorecard

Justin Tyler (2/19) and Ben Miller (2/20) were the other wicket-takers.

The premiership favourites needed just 30 overs to chase down the modest total.

Tyler (43*) backed up his bowling efforts top-scoring with the bat, while skipper Ryan Fisher led from the front with a brisk knock of 42.

On Sunday, the Second XI struggled against Hawks, losing by 135 runs at Gary Smorgon Oval.

Scorecard

The First XI continues its two-day match against Monash University at the Clayton campus on March 5.
