16th MAI Lawn Bowls Carnival

Posted: 01-Feb-2017 by Maccabi VIC

At the end of 2016 nearly 50 Jewish lawn bowlers from across Australia competed in the 16th MAI Lawn Bowls Carnival, hosted by Armadale Bowls Club.

Participants from Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia competed in the five-day carnival, with places in the Maccabiah Games up for grabs.

The fours final came down to the last bowl when Victorian Skip, Steven Rubenstein’s drive narrowly missed the shot bowl, resulting in his team of Michael Yelen, Peter Felbel and Brian Rosenberg handing the combined SA/WA team skipped by Gary Benveniste the Fours gold medal by one shot.

NSW pair Rod Silber and John Weinberg finished the tournament undefeated and combined brilliantly to out draw Tony Tate and Mike Brown of WA and win the Pairs Gold Medal.

Convenor Les Newman welcomed bowlers and special guests from the 1997 Australian Maccabiah bowls team, including Jill Diamond, Denese Brick, Pam Morley and manager Tony Tate.

Both Diamond and Tate spoke about the tragic bridge collapse which claimed the lives of Australian Maccabians Yettie Bennett, Elizabeth Sawicki, Greg Small and lawn bowler Warren Zines. Tate lit the Warren Zines memorial candle and said the event has affected the lives of all team members.

The Warren Zines Mensch of the carnival trophy was presented to Steven Rubenstein. Helen Weiss was crowned Queen of the carnival and was also awarded the Jack Brandon wooden spoon as personality of the carnival. Former soccer player Phil Filler (NSW) received the Most Promising Bowler award.Part of the Maccabiah Games Team going to Israel in 2017Part of the Maccabiah Games Team going to Israel in 2017

The carnival ended with the announcement of the Australian Maccabiah Bowls Team from recent Hall of Fame inductee and manager of the team, Mark Klapish. The team attending the games in Israel is Gary Benveniste (SA), Peter Grunfeld and Rod Silber (NSW) and Victorians Peter Felbel, Antony Klooger, Gary Lasky, Brian Rosenberg, Mark Rubenstein, Steven Rubenstein and Michael Yelen.

Entries for the 2017 Ladies and Men’s Victorian Jewish Bowls Singles are now open and all enquiries should be directed to Gary Lasky on 0419808945 or email
