An Amazing Time At Perth Junior Carnival

Team VIC

Team VIC has a fantastic week at the Perth Junior Carnival.  The 35th Maccabi Australia Junior Carnival was held from 15-22 January 2017 in ideal weather.  A total of 177 participants from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia competed in a variety of sports and enjoyed a number of different social activities.

The 84 Victorian participants, 7 youth leaders and 3 team managers landed in Perth mid-morning on 15th Jan to the exuberant cheers and applause of the participants.  After being greeted by the excited host families, the participants were taken to their homes for an afternoon of relaxation.  In the early evening, all states made their way to Maccabi HQ at Yokine where they marched proudly into the Gordon Bloomfield Hall behind their flagbearers for the opening ceremony.  Amongst the dignitaries were Lauren Ehrlich from Maccabi NSW representing Maccabi Australia, Patron Dr Joel Silbert, Maccabi WA President Joan Hillman, MC Todd Wilner, a beautiful rendition of Advance Australia Fair and Hatikvah by Hannah Charsinsky and a very moving "welcome to country". Of course, the two marvellous Carni Managers, Debbie Katz and Debbie Silbert also officially welcomed everyone to the start of Carnival.  The kids then kicked on with a 'getting to know you' party in the gardens.

Playing sports on Day 1 of Carni was a perfect start to meet new people and form new friendships.  In beautiful weather, the Maccabi grounds were full of participants taking part in Soccer, Touch Rugby, T-ball, Tennis and Table-tennis.  After a beautiful catered lunch provided by Café 61, the participants were bussed to several nearby indoor venues to play beach volleyball, netball, basketball and futsal.  After an exhausting day, the kids had a hugely enjoyable evening at Bounce – a great time was had by all.

Day 2 was greeted by more glorious weather and the participants once again enjoyed a day of indoor and outdoor sports followed by a brilliant night at Bayswater Waves.  Maccabi had the venue to itself and maximised use of the indoor and outdoor pools.  The huge wave pool was a particular favourite.

A mid-week change-up saw all the participants head to Adventure World for the day.  A variety of wet and dry rides kept everyone occupied and even the team managers and youth leaders had a go on some of the rides!  A cool evening greeted everyone back at Maccabi HQ where a movie under the stars was shown and enjoyed by some while others stayed indoors to enjoy each other’s company.

The final day of sports was on Thursday and the participants especially loved the opportunity to try new sports in the afternoon.  Thrills and spills were aplenty at Rollerdrome in the evening where the participants donned roller skates and rocked and rolled to the music.

Friday was Community Day where Carni participants spent the morning at a number of venues including several Shuls, Menora Charity and the Maurice Zeffert Home (MZH).  It was a fulfilling morning with participants baking Challah for Shabbat, playing with young kids and engaging with residents at MZH.  All participants had a free Friday afternoon before going to several Shuls for a Friday service.  Team Managers and Youth Leaders were invited by the Perth Organising Committee to a wonderful Shabbat dinner at Maccabi HQ.

Sadly, Saturday was the final day in Perth and everyone had a free day with their billet families.  Everyone came together in the evening for a short closing ceremony in which all teams mixed together, a far cry from the state based groups on the first night.  A black light disco was then held with the participants partying until midnight.  Tears were shed at the close by many new friends amid the hope and expectation that these friendships were just the beginning….and to be renewed at the Melbourne Carni in 2018!!

So, an early start on Sunday where all interstate teams were deposited at the airport by the wonderful host families and headed home, weary but invigorated after a fantastic week of sports and socialising.

Sincere thanks to all the magnificent organising committee in Perth who hosted such a brilliant event.  Until next year……..
