300 Days until Maccabiah Begins

Posted: 22-Sep-2016 by Maccabi VIC

Tom York, Head of Delegation for the 2017 Maccabiah Games, answers questions in relation to the 20Th Australian Maccabiah Teams preparation with 300 days before the opening ceremony on 6 July 2017.

Q1 – WHERE IS YOUR MANAGEMENT CURRENTLY UP TO IN THE PLANNING STAGES?

“With 300 days to go, I am very excited about where we are at with our planning.

We have received incredible amount of interest from our athletes from all parts of Australia.

In fact between the athletes and officials there were some 880 people  nominating to participate in the 28 different sports on offer.

The nominations closed on 30 June 2016 and in the past couple of months selection trials have been held by a number of the teams.

To date we have ratified 10 teams representing 150 very happy athletes.”

Q2 – WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THIS INCREDIBLE INTEREST BY OUR ATHLETES IN WANTING TO COMPETE AT NEXT YEARS MACCABIAH GAMES?

“ I get asked this question many times.

I believe it is due to the great work that Maccabi Australia, Maccabi NSW,VICTORIA and WA do through its many programs, initiatives and promotion.

The other reason is that our athletes want to compete at international level and living so far away from the rest of the world we don’t get too many opportunities to do so .

The  Maccabiah Games  represent  a great opportunity to compete against Jewish athletes from all parts of the world.

After all, the Maccabiah Games offer a genuine sporting experience.

As a population we live longer and as sport plays such a major part in our wellbeing, we manage to prolong our sporting careers.

Our Masters contingent is growing with every games because from the age of 35 you are eligible to compete in the Masters Competition.

Finally I would like to think that my management  did an outstanding job in recruiting talented team managers and attracting top coaches for our teams.”

Q3 – WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS?

“The next steps are for the reminder of the teams to hold trials and for the successful athletes to be ratified.

We want to provide our athletes with the best possible preparation which includes leadership development workshops.

Assist teams with fund raising opportunities.”

Q4 – WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF THE BIG MILESTONES IN THE PROCESSES  ACHIEVED SO FAR?

 “Wov,that’s a big question.

Not sure I can restrict the milestones to just one, only because there have  been so many.

But if I have to nominate one it would be our recruitment of officials and athletes that resulted in record nominations.”

Q5 – HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU CURRENTLY ALLOCATE TO MACCABIAH PREPERATION EACH WEEK?

“ I am very fortunate to have a very strong and capable upper management who are very much hands on  and have contributed to the smooth running of our preparation.

Our office operates out of Melbourne and is led by Nikki Burger, who is the General Manager of the team. Nikki has a wealth of  sports administration experience.

In addition to overseeing our preparation, Nikki is also working with the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia in the areas of Governance, Policy and Athletes Contracts.

My major role is to make sure that we have a successful and well managed delegation and that includes fund raising, public relations and mentoring.

Some weeks are busier than others but in reality its 24/7 because you never stop thinking about the teams  preparations.”

Q6 WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND OUT UPDATES?

“ The best avenue to find out updates is on the Maccabi Australia website. We have a dedicated website MACCABIAH GAMES 2017 which covers all important information and is regularly updated.

In addition we are on Facebook and Twitter.

All team members receive a monthly newsletter.”
