The Maccabi Athletic Club AGM and Presentation

Posted: 28-Jul-2011 by Maccabi VIC

The Maccabi Athletic Club AGM and Presentation was held last Sunday evening at the home of Braham and Rebecca Shnider with over 40 club members and guests in attendance. It was a great night – heaps of food, awards and a very inspirational speech from Zac Ashkanasy about training and commitment to the sport.

A fond farewell from the Committee was given to Neville Page after 16 terrific years of service as Club Treasurer. Neville was awarded the inaugural Phil Opas trophy for exceptional services to the club. Thanks to the Sonenberg family for donating this wonderful trophy in honour of Phil (who passed away 2 years ago) and was Club Patron for as long as I can remember.

Myer Vorchheimer was made a Life Member of the club after 18 years of competition and dedication to the club. The only years that 66 year old Myer has missed competing over the past 20 years was when he snapped his two Achilles tendons, one each foot, one year after the other! But he still competes in all the sprints and the jumps – can you believe it! Myer also won the Patrons trophy for best interclub performer.

Other awards went to Jemima Montag to recognise her outstanding victories in the Australian and State under 14 racewalking championships, Brad Serry (x country champ), Arianne Kadish (coaches award), and Mattie Michael (most improved athlete).

Zac announced the basis of a new training regime which includes group long runs every second Sunday morning, structured training programs, target races and a junior sports training camp with the VIS in September. Kevin Lieberthal from Dynamic Performance (physiotherapist) spoke to the meeting outlining the services he has offered to the club including videoing the running styles of our members, analysing running technique for efficiencies and advocating subtle changes that may be applied to improve performance and limit the likelihood of running type injuries.

Sunday training saw the introduction of the “long run”. Braham and Julien led a group of long distance athletes including Dan Arbib, Sheree Freedman, Dan Gold, Louise Aaron and Heidi Hayden – down to Brighton beach and back.

Congratulations to Brad Serry and Jemima Montag who competed in the Schools x country championships on Saturday.

A big Mazeltov to Michael and Stacy Budlender on the birth of their second child, Shira bat Shiva.

And a ‘speedy recovery’ to club marathon record holder Tom Danos and Michael Bookman (Executive Director of MacVic) after their recent operations.
