Four Generations Of The Cohen Family Share A Connection Through Maccabi

Posted: 13-May-2015 by Maccabi VIC

The Cohen family’s connection with Maccabi began in the mid 1950’s when Godfrey and Myra Cohen and their three children Natalie, Daryl and Trevor began hosting functions in their home in order to help raise funds to field a Jewish football team.  Daryl successfully led the club to its registration into the VAFA back in 1957 and both he and Trevor reached their milestone 100th game on the same day.  Godfrey became the club’s second President and both sons took on Presidency, Managerial and Coaching roles upon retirement.  16 great grandchildren have since gone on to represent the club.

However the connection with Maccabi has not only been on the football field.  Daryl, Trevor and Boyd Cohen were all selected to represent Australia at the Maccabiah Games in weightlifting, Max Curtis for Volleyball and Daryl and Trevor are both Hall of Fame recipients. Jessica, Lauren and Courtney Krulis participated in the Pan American Games (Basketball) and with Godfrey and Myra’s total of 32 great grandchildren, Maccabi has been represented in Basketball, Soccer, Tennis, Weightlifting, Cricket, Swimming, Netball, Volleyball, Athletics, Golf and plenty of Junior Carnivals!

“Sport has always played a major part in the Cohen family and Maccabi provides a fun, friendly and competitive forum in which to do this.  We both thank and congratulate Maccabi on your 90 years and are sure that the organisation will be around for many more, enabling future generations of Jewish sports stars to fulfil their dreams!”

It has been 90 years since that very first interstate sporting challenge in 1925, which saw a group of young Jewish men and women start the journey that would become Maccabi in Australia.

From this humble beginning, Maccabi Victoria alone now connects more than 3000 members of all abilities across 20 clubs. Our membership now stretches back five generations.

The success of Maccabi, its clubs, programs and initiatives, is reflective of the community’s success, and is only made possible with your support.

Your tax deductible gift can continue this important community connection for current and future generations.  Funds raised through the Maccabi Victoria Links for Life Appeal  provide assistance to families who might not otherwise be able to join a Maccabi Club or send their child to Maccabi Junior Carnival, as well as developing Coaching Development Programmes and supporting our clubs.

Volunteer phone callers are needed for our Annual Links for Life Appeal. If you are able to assist, please click here to volunteer online or contact our office during business hours Ph. 9563 5885.
