Charley's Story - An Inspiring Story of True Integration

Posted: 30-Apr-2015 by Maccabi VIC

A key initiative of the recent Maccabi Junior Carnival, held in Melbourne, was the inclusion and integration of Jewish people with disabilities. In addition to 28 members of Maccabi Victoria All Abilities Group participating as youth leaders and volunteers, 13-year-old Charley Fox participated as an athlete in the Victorian team.

With the aid of Youth Leader, Zoe Diamond, Charley was fully integrated into Carnival – sport and social. Zoe described the experience as "heart-warming" while also teaching the participants an important lesson in disability awareness and integration.

"I watched Charley’s basketball team learn to embrace and appreciate him over the week. From the beginning, a young boy took Charley under his wing, explaining to him the rules, cracking jokes and doing what friends do and, by the end, the entire team was following suit," she said.

"He had the time of his life and is already pestering his mum about attending Carnival in Sydney next year."

It has been 90 years since that very first interstate sporting challenge in 1925, which saw a group of young Jewish men and women start the journey that would become Maccabi in Australia.

From this humble beginning, Maccabi Victoria alone now connects more than 3000 members of all abilities across 20 clubs. Our membership now stretches back five generations.

The success of Maccabi, its clubs, programs and initiatives, is reflective of the community’s success, and is only made possible with your support.

Your tax deductible gift can make an impact in the life of a child like Charley.  Funds raised through the Maccabi Victoria Links for Life Appeal are used to raise awareness and support the activities of the Maccabi Victoria All Abilities Group, to provide assistance to families who might not otherwise be able to join a Maccabi Club or send their child to Maccabi Junior Carnival, Coaching Development Programmes and supporting our clubs.

Volunteer phone callers are needed for our Annual Appeal calling. If you are able to assist, please click here to volunteer online or contact our office during business hours Ph. 9563 5885.
