Victory for Victoria in Interstate Tennis Challenge

Posted: 30-Apr-2015 by Maccabi VIC

It was a matter of state pride at the Melbourne Park Tennis Centre over the weekend, with 12 member of the Maccabi Sydney Tennis Club travelling across the border to take on their Victoria counterparts.

With Maccabi tennis's Melbourne home - Leon Haskin Centre - unavailable due to wild weather, tournament organisers Glen Silver (Sydney) and Ron Schweitzer (Melbourne) moved the two-day event indoors.

The Victorian and NSW players did battle in three groups: top, intermediate, and genteel. With the Melburnians clearly relishing home court advantage, they trounced the visitors 31 sets to 7 overall and lifted the inaugural winners' cup.

Sydney member Robert Kohn said, "Both Clubs played in a friendly atmosphere and the Melburnians showed great hospitality."

This tournament is set to become an annual fixture on the Maccabi Calendar and will be hosted by Sydney next year at the White City courts.
