Warriors Return to Winning Ways

Last weekend, the Maccabi Warriors snapped a string of successive losses with a rousing 70-62 victory over the Coburg Giants.
Despite still missing several key players, Maccabi’s even contributions across the board combined with impressive team-orientated basketball helped them overcome Coburg in a tough, physical contest.
Jeremy Dukes (19 points, 19 rebounds) and Eric Witschel (12 points, 10 rebounds) were inspirational for the Warriors, dominating their opposing big men with ferocious rebounding and inside scoring.
It was this towering duo that got the Warriors started, with Dukes opening scoring with a deft baseline drive, before multiple Witschel offensive rebounds led to another Maccabi score.

Also busy early was Jason Conway (22 points), who after some poor shooting performances in previous rounds looked confident and aggressive going to the basket, helping Maccabi establish a slim 17-15 buffer at the end of the first.
Captain James Tsun’s return to action after two weeks on the sideline was instrumental to Maccabi’s success, with the wily point guard’s silky ball control and vision on clear display.

His game total of nine assists, most which came in the second quarter, guided the Warriors to a 15-point lead, until Coburg rallied behind their American import DeMarcus Berry (15 points), reeling off 12 unanswered points and grabbing the lead briefly before halftime.

The second half saw both teams go basket for basket, the lead rarely extending beyond 4 points for either club.
Through the continuous inside presence of Dukes and Witschel, and Maccabi’s superior offensive execution, they were able to establish a twelve-point margin early in the fourth stanza.

But the Giants refused to give in, and Maccabi’s lead looked at risk until reserve guard Boaz Ozeri drained a huge three with less than 3 minutes to play, giving Maccabi a 10-point lead.
As the buzzer sounded, the sheer delight emerging from Maccabi’s fourth triumph of the season was contagious, reinstating some much-needed self-belief into the proud club.
