Maccabi 90th Anniversary 'Inspirations' Series

Norman Same

Norman Same is ranked in the top 3 Jewish Hockey players Victoria has ever seen.

After starting his career at Ajax and playing in the State League 3 Premiership, Norman went on to play 16 seasons and over 250 games at State League ! level, including a premiership in 1987.

In 1973 Norman coached the Ajax U12's to a Premiership and captained the Australian Maccabi Hockey side to a bronze medal in 1997.

Norman also captained the 1977 Maccabi Athletics team, winning a Gold medal at the games and winning a Bronze Medal in the Victorian Open Championships in both 1977 and 1978.

Norman also contributed off the field including 7 years as the Chairperson of Finance for Maccabi Australia.

Norman has represented Australia numerous times and will be competing internationally in 2015 as a member over 60's Australian Masters Hockey Team. 


David Sonenberg

David has been a leading player and inspirational member of AJAX Maccabi Hockey Club both off and on the field and as a life member, takes a keen interest in the club’s affairs. His involvement commenced in 1963 and continues.

At club level he has been involved with all aspects of administration, coaching, umpiring, playing and leadership and has encouraged many members to take on responsibility and develop, and always do their best.

He is well known within the Melbourne, Victorian country and interstate hockey communities and wears his Maccabi affiliation with pride.

He has served on a State hockey sub-committee for some years.

He was a leader in promoting Hockey within Australian Maccabi circles in late 1960s and 1970s and achieved the sport’s inclusion in interstate carnivals from 1974.

Recently playing over 50’s pennant hockey; member of Victorian State 65s Hockey team for Australian Masters Championships 2011 and Coordinator of that team.

Overtime he has encouraged and recruited many to play hockey from juniors to veterans.

He is very proud to have had daughter Nikki as a member of the Australian Maccabiah [Israel]  ladies hockey team in 2005 and 2009, together with daughter Emma also as a member of the Australian Maccabiah ladies hockey team in 2005.


Maccabi Hockey Club Resurgence

 2015  is looking to be an exciting year for the Maccabi Hockey Club  coming off the back of success in the past two years.

In 2014 the club had a fantastic winter season with the Veterans team winning the winter competition.  In 2013 the first’s team won an elusive flag.

The resurgence is across all teams as the club have started U10, U12, U14 and U16 teams and are hopeful of a ladies team. They are also looking to grow their men’s base and develop a second men’s team as well.
