Richelle Marks

Throughout the history of the Maccabi movement, Richelle Marks is still the only Jewish female to have won a Victoria Open Swimming Title.

In 1975, at the tender age of 14, Richelle won the Open 1500m title and came third in the U16 400m freestyle after winnig five gold medals at the Perth Carnival a few weeks earlier.

Her five victories were all achieved in Carnival record time, which in turn led to the Lord mayor of Perth presenting her with a Golden Spoon for her remarkable performance.

In recent years, Richelle's Maccabi involvement has been in a coaching capacity.

Andrew Maver

Probably Victoria's top Jewish swimmer ever, Andrew maver won the Australian Open Shorcourse 1500m freestyle championship in 1990 as well as winning Victorian Open titles in the 800 and 1500m the same year.

However, his achievements were possibly even greater the following year, as he left the Victorian Open Championships with Gold medals in the 200m and 400m Individual Medleys as well as the 1500m freestyle and Silver medals in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle events.

A member of the Australian Swim Squad between 1990 and 1993, Andrew coached the Maccabi swimming club for four years between 1995 and 1998.

Maccabi Swimming Junior Stars

Benno Negri won a silver medal in the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Maui, Hawaii, last year

In his debut for the Australian team, 16-year-old Negri, who trains with the MLC Aquatic squad, also won silver as part of the boys’ 4x100m freestyle relay, with the green-and-gold foursome touching the wall seconds after the Americans.

“It was definitely a highlight, really incredible,” Negri said.

“Being among boys who are top of the level swimming in America, top in Japan, top in China, and competing against them, it really brings out the best in you and the best in the team.”

During the individual events, Negri recorded a personal best time of 51.17 seconds in 100m freestyle.

The young gun also smashed his previous personal best in 100m backstroke (57.7 seconds) and clocked an impressive time of 23.44 seconds in 50m freestyle.

Young Jewish swimmers Benno Negri, Dante Negri, Jordan Hazan and Brooke Roseman continue to make a splash at state competitions, with fantastic resultsthe best at the recent 2015 Victorian Sprint Championships.
