Montag Sisters Medal at Victorian Track and Field Championships

Posted: 03-Mar-2015 by Maccabi VIC

Hi Athletes,

Saul Lotzoff missed out on running the Junior  Victorian Championships because of the rain last week but he made it to the Milers Club and ran a strong 1 mile (1600 meters approx. for all of you under the age of 40!)in a time equivalent to a 4 min 40 sec 1500m (could have placed him 6th or 7th at the Vic champs under 16!).

Victorian Track and Field Championships

At the Victorian Track and Field Championships held on the weekend at Lakeside Track, Maccabi club sisters, Jemima and Piper Montag excelled. 17 year old Jemima Montag won the silver medal in the Open Women’s 5K race walk in a quick time of 23 min 06.80sec. This time betters the qualifying standard (23min 22.00sec) for selection in the Australian team for the World Youth Championships to be held in Columbia in July 2015. Final selection trials for the team will be held in Sydney on the 11th-15th March where Jemima needs to finish in the top 2 placegetters – which, on current form, she is highly favoured to do.

Also last weekend 15 year old Piper Montag won the bronze medal in the under 16 women’s heptathlon as part of the State championships. In a tough competition of 7 events Piper placed first in the shot put and long jump, 2nd in the 80 Hurdles, jumped a PB in the high jump and was very competitive in the 200m, 800m and javelin. Piper has qualified to compete in the National track and field championships in Sydney in March.

Club junior Asher Marks, fresh from a PB in the 400m in the Junior Championships, ran in the Open Track championship for the extra competition and experience.

Congratulations also to Club coach Alwyn Jones who won the State triple jump championship for the “umpteenth” time – even Alwyn doesn’t know how many times he has won it!
