Posted: 30-Jun-2011 by Maccabi VIC

AJAX Maccabi Water Polo Club played in the State League 4 Grand Final against Melbourne Collegians on Wednesday evening.

This was the 5th grand final in 5 seasons for the team. Unfortunately the team was not able to follow up its 3 past victories and went down 6-3. This was a very tough encounter between two experienced teams. In their only previous encounter this season, Collegians defeated Maccabi 7-2, but were well on top all game. The grand final was a different story. After a tight struggle in the first quarter which saw the neither side able to score early until Maccabi was able to get the first goal of the game.
David Nussbaum blocked two Collegian defenders opening up a gap in the defence allowing Paul Fleiszig to shoot the first goal. The lead was not held for too long, with Collegians taking advantage of an offensive mix up and scoring a quick fast break goal.
Just before quarter time, Collegians were awarded a controversial 5 metre penalty which they converted, leaving Maccabi down 2-1 at quarter time. The second quarter also started as a tight affair with neither side able to score early. Collegians scored the first goal of the quarter to put them 3-1 up.
The game become a scrappy affair, with both teams drawing a number of exclusions, but unable to convert them into goals. Joel Price was able to get Maccabi back on the score board with a great goal from centre forward. He was able to turn the centre back with the ball in his hand and slip it past the goal keeper. The teams went to the half time break with Collegians leading 3-2. The third quarter started as the 2nd finished off - extremely scrappy with lots of exclusions. In a brilliant goal keeping performance, Chris Moyle was able to stop everything that was thrown at him. He was able to keep the ball out of goals through a Maccabi double exclusion (2 men down). Maccabi again broke the dead lock when Fleiszig was able to take advantage of an extra man exclusion levelling the scores at 3-3. Collegians were able to take back the lead with a brilliant centre forward goal just before the ¾ time break, giving them a 4-3 lead at the break.
Neither side was able to break through early in the last quarter. Collegians were able to score a goal giving them a 2 goal buffer about half way through the quarter. Maccabi needed to take some risks to try and bridge the margin. They were able to get numerous shots off, but were unable to score. Collegians were able to score the last goal of the game with 1 second left with a huge shot from 20 metres which caught the goal keeper off guard to run out 6-3 victors. (Goals: Fleiszig 2, Price 1)
