Jack Cyngler celebrates victory

JEWISH team Maccabi Sounds pulled off a remarkable comeback against highly-fancied opponents Deepdene to win the grand final of Metro League 2, last week at Albert Park.

Anthony Majtlis, Dean Frenkel and Jack Cyngler triumphed five games to four after an intensely close decider.

Deepdene had finished the home and away season top of the ladder and its players, Geoff Prior, Tom Kent and Leonard Grigoryan are also the competition’s three leading players of the season. Fair to say, the odds were stacked against Maccabi for the premiership.

The final began with young gun Majtlis winning his first two matches, while veterans Cyngler and Frenkel lost both of theirs. Deepdene were ahead four games to two and needed to take just one more match to secure the title. But Maccabi Sounds had other ideas.

Majtlis, who is known to thrive in finals, comfortably won his third tie of the night (three games to one), before Frenkel fought his way under immense pressure to defeat Prior and, to the audience’s surprise, help his side draw even at four rubbers each.

Enter Cyngler. After he had lost his opening two matches, Deepdene would have thought it had the title sown up.

Down by two games in the decider, and the title slipping beyond Maccabi’s reach, Cyngler switched into another gear and clawed his way back to win the third and the fourth. With the scores tied at two games apiece, the result was to be decided by the day’s very last game.

Cyngler rode the momentum and cruised through the last game, completing a fairytale comeback and capturing victory for the Maccabi underdogs.
