Appointment of Lauren Mandel - All Abilities Inclusion Officer

Posted: 30-Jan-2014 by Maccabi VIC

Maccabi Victoria is delighted to announce that Lauren Mandel has commenced an initial one year contract as the inaugural All Abilities Inclusion Coordinator. Lauren comes to Maccabi Victoria with considerable experience in the disability field, having worked in both a paid (Oakleigh Centre, Corrections, and Scope Vic as a Disability Support Worker, as well as eight years with the Maccabi Basketball Club as assistant coach of the All Abilities team) and volunteer capacity (with Jewish Aid (Derech Eretz Program); Access Inc – where she is currently a Board member - B’nei Akiva and the Lord Somers Camps). She has a strong passion for working in this field, and is currently completing a Masters in Social Work at Monash University.

Lauren’s employment follows on from the 2013 All Abilities Research Project conducted by Nikki Burger for Maccabi Victoria and Jewish Care, supported by Access Inc. This Project identified a range of needs for the target group, including the need to develop a stronger data base of those eligible to participate in the range of inclusion activities, especially in recreation and sport. It also highlighted ways that Maccabi Victoria clubs could become more inclusive of people of all abilities. We are extremely pleased that Nikki will continue her involvement in this field through the provision of professional supervision for Lauren.

Lauren will report to the Maccabi Victoria All Abilities Steering Committee, which includes representatives from Jewish Care and Access, as well as parent representatives. Lauren will spend the first few months contacting all key stakeholders (including government and not-for-profit service providers), and developing a broader data base, before beginning the critical work with Maccabi Victoria clubs, working with them on policies and practices to enhance inclusion. She will also take a significant responsibility for organising the ongoing range of activities for the All Abilities Program.

Funding for this position and the overall project has come from a Government Grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation as well as a range of private donors, headed by a major support from Alan Synman and family. Further funding support will be sought from attendees at the Project Launch (6.15 p.m. – 8.30 p.m.) at Mossgreen in Armadale on Wednesday March 12th, supported by inspirational blind keynote speaker, lawyer and marathon runner Richard Bernstein, here from Michigan USA.
