New All Abilities Holiday Initiative fosters a positive attitude to exercise

Posted: 18-Apr-2013 by Maccabi VIC

34 Jewish children and adults with special needs attended the inaugural Maccabi Victoria & Jewish Care All Abilities Holiday Activities programme which ran from 3 – 5 April during the recent school holidays.

Activities on offer included tennis, soccer, cricket, volleyball, lawn bowls, dance, art & craft.

The participants had an absolute ball getting active in such a variety of activities. And their parents were both very excited and appreciative about the program as they feel that that sport and physical activity are really important avenues of camaraderie and good health.

The social component was also important for the participants who enjoyed socialising with each other whilst participating or even sitting out to watch the group. In fact some participants hadn’t crossed paths for a long time.

One parent commented

“Exercise is vitally important to people with additional needs, but is often hard to access in the general community. Offering a program that is fun and has a variety of activities fosters a positive attitude to exercise.”

Specialist coaching was organised for the Holiday Programme by Neville Braver of MSI (Melbourne Sports Institute) and employed experienced aides and numerous volunteers to assist over the three days.

Maccabi Victoria Jewish Care All Abilities is a partnership between Maccabi Victoria and Jewish Care ( Vic ) Inc working together in the promotion and participation of sport and recreational activities for people of all abilities. This group is supported by Access Inc and by the local council.

Prior fundraising events, including a recent communal Tribal Dance event which gave the opportunity to include people of all abilities to participate in a fun and active event together, as well as generous support from Theodor Herzl Social Club, major sponsor of the All Abilities, a Glen Eira Council Community Grant and other generous supporters enabled us to offer this inaugural All Abilities Activity program.
The Alma Sports Club generously donated the use of the venue and through our generous sponsorship, we were able to offer complimentary registration to all the participants.

We hope that this will be the first of many such Holiday Activity programmes.
