Maccabi Athletics Update

Posted: 19-Oct-2012 by Maccabi VIC

Saturday interclub competition commenced again last Saturday where Ashley Kamien simply “rolled” out an easy 4 min 26 sec for his first ever 1500m race – clearly winning his division. Josh Lubofsky ran a strong 100m in 12.36 sec to show he has improved over the summer whilst young guns Matthew Moss (in his first competition for Maccabi) and Asher Marks both ran close to PBs in the 100m and 400m, and of course the “warhorse” Myer Vorchheimer saddled up for another year’s competition despite just stepping off the plane from Israel.

Sunday morning saw the Melbourne Marathon, ½ marathon and 10K Fun Run. At least 16 of our members (or club “friends”) participated in the events. Stand out performances were recorded by Sheree Freedman in the marathon finishing 67th female overall in the time of 3 hours 17 min 28 seconds, Brad Serry in the half clocking 1 hour 24min 23 seconds and Michelle Levy 1 hour 32min 10 sec– and all the other “girls” in the 1/2 marathon including: Hilary Blankfield, Sarah Kramer, Louise Aaron, Aliza Golshani and Debbie Kipen, 10K runners including Heidi Hayden and Debbie Sandler and first time marathoner Mandy Kadish. Well done ladies (and Brad).

Tanya Serry and David Huppert completed their first marathons in very fine fashion and coaches Zac Ashkanasy and Braham Shnider also ran. Zac, despite no training and hip problems for the last 2 years still easily smashed the 40 minute barrier for the 10K and Braham unfortunately played with fate and a “dicky” hamstring – and came off second best just 4K into the marathon (but he was on “world record pace”!). Braham, we are sure, will mend quickly and hit the tarmac shortly.

And it was great to see ex club track athletes Gary Brown (1/2 marathon) run 1 hour 39 minutes 19 seconds and Michael Nathan (full marathon) record 3 hours 18 min 53 seconds.

Sunday afternoon was truly inspiring with the return to training of three “old” timers (the oldest being 21 and the youngest 19!!) Max Kapoustine, Perry Kagan-Gescheit and Jonathan Fanaroff – all University students in the prime of their fitness??!! Who joined the other 15 athletes in a solid sprint endurance session….all getting in condition to impress Gaffa (the coach) next Sunday.

Next Saturday round two of interclub will be held in Frankston from 1.30pm with the 800m at 2.00pm, the 200m at 2.10pm and the 4 x 400 relay at 3.30pm, 3000m at 4.20pm, triple jump………..Need a lift…….please ring me.

Just a reminder:
