U9 KANGA MACCABI SEE OFF PORT MELBOURNE IN GOAL-FEST

North Caulfield Maccabi finished as 8-4 winners on Sunday morning, with a hat-trick to Aviv Cohen and singles to Joel Parazol, Akiva Fox, Eliav Goldberger, Eliav Goldberger, Zac Maidenberg and Ben Goldhirsch putting an exclamation point on an enthralling encounter at Caulfield Park.

A strong Port Melbourne outfit came out firing as the first chance of the game was fired just wide of the mark, an early let off for the home side. Cohen broke the deadlock soon after, however, scoring the first of the game for Maccabi, blasting an unstoppable strike into the roof of the net off a loose ball that had fallen to him on the edge of the area.

Parazol and Goldhirsch were working hard in tandem as the second came off what was to be a deadly combination between the two. Goldhirsch fed through his partner in crime as Parazol was able to get a touch on the ball and poke it into the corner to double his side’s advantage. Akiva Fox soon joined in the party with his side’s third of the match, as a high ball floated into the box was volleyed just beyond the vising keeper’s grasp before nestling in the far corner. Eliav Goldberger was pulling all the strings in midfield as he danced past several defenders whilst Amiel Selzer displayed great touch as he controlled balls coming from the air and was able to spot teammates with a series of fine passes in various stages throughout the opening period.

However, Port Melbourne pulled one back as a defensive mix up from Maccabi allowed for a clean break and neat finish on the counter, and the visitors soon added a second, making it 3-2, as an attacker was able to place home a curled shot with the opposition threatening to even up the tie. Meanwhile, Maccabi goalkeeper Daniel Schauder was keeping his side in the game as he made a series of quite unbelievable saves to keep Port Melbourne at bay and ensure his side kept their lead in the shadows of half time. Zac Maidenberg eventually released some of the pressure, adding a 4th shortly before the whistle after a pass across the face of the goal was fired into the back of the net. It was to be the last kick of the opening period, though, as the first half came to a close moments later with Maccabi holding a comfortable two goal lead.

Port Melbourne scored again only minutes after the restart as the ball was easily passed into the back of the net off a lovely flowing move. This seemed to spark Maccabi into action, however, as a stunner from Goldhirsch restored the two goal advantage with what was perhaps the best of the day. Some space opened up on the right for the young winger as he paused, and unleashed a wicked, dipping strike from well into his own half beyond the keeper and into the back of the net to raucous applause from the home team’s dedicated supporters.

Cohen blew the lead out to 3 as he coolly placed a shot into the corner from an angle and another was added a short time later as the man of the moment blasted a shot at the goalkeeper, who could only parry it straight into the path of Eliav Goldenberger to neatly tuck away his side’s 7th. The goal-fest wasn’t done yet though, as Cohen got a touch on from Amiel Selzer’s brilliant shot to see it fly over the keeper’s head and snuffle out any Port Melbourne comeback. There was still time for a consolation though, as a piledriver from an opposition midfielder marginally reduced the scoreline with the home side eventually running out 8-4 winners in what was truly an end to end clash.
