Scoreboard and Upcoming Fixtures

SENIORS-FIRSTS  Round 8: Maccabi 6 – 2 Hawthorn

Maccabi Hockey Club has recorded a comprehensive 6-2 victory over Hawthorn to return it to the top 4 and put it on track to play finals. After two games without a win, Maccabi needed a strong performance to get its season back on track and it got exactly that with a dominant first half. With the game only 5 minutes old, Lawrence Lifson released Jarred Grek down the right wing with a precise through ball. Grek took the ball into the circle and squared it to Daniel Guttmann who turned it in from the penalty spot. The trick was repeated minutes later with Guttmann scoring his second from an almost identical position. Bryce Watson got on the scoreboard shortly after with a deft deflection through his legs off a Dave Birnbaum short corner before David Zwier made it four when he got a slight touch on Lifson’s short corner flick. Zwier then closed down and dispossessed his opposing half before bringing the ball into the circle for Guttmann to complete his hattrick. Guttman's fourth goal followed shortly after as more good play down Maccabi’s right hand side led to an easy finish in front of goal. Maccabi missed a couple of other solid chances at the left post but went into half time with a commanding 6-0 lead.

The second half saw Maccabi tire as it couldn’t keep up the relentless pressure on the opposition, and despite Guttmann hitting two shots straight at the keeper, it couldn’t add to its tally. At the other end, Hawthorn found enough space to slot two consolation goals.

SENIORS-SECONDS   Round 8:  Maccabi 1 – 2 Waverley

In another tight tussle the 2nds went down to Waverley 2-1 after Daniel Goodrich scored to put Maccabi in the lead, Waverley scored from a goal mouth scramble and scored the winner from an unlucky deflection off a Maccabi stick. Nathan Guttman, Josh Tremigliozzi and Benji Perlow were solid in defence and with Hayden Aizicowitz in goals they kept Waverley at bay.

 MASTERS   Round 8:  Maccabi 6 – 0 Werribee

Maccabi played a home game tonight against the lowly ranked Tigers. Upon hearing that our 3 forwards weren't playing tonight the team were shattered. Big Wayne, Pistol Pete and the Browndog all had other commitments (knitting, sewing and playing pocket billiards). This news didn't stop Tomahawk Grunny from delivering one of the most inspirational revs ups the team had ever heard. Game Changer Rappa agreed to warm the bench from the outset to give Blood Knuckles Baigel a run at left wing. This decision proved critical as Baigel whacked the ball into the back of the net. It was then time for Game Changer Rappa to come onto the field. Instantly the team pepped up. Rappa took the ball from half way and ran to the circle and popped off a cracking shot only to be stopped by the foot of the opposition. The team were unsure who was going to take the stroke. It's times like these that champions step up and take charge.  Despite not being the designated stroke taker (Big Mouth Geiger is still not speaking to Game Changer) Rappa reached into his repertoire and produced a stunning slower ball straight down the middle of the goal at knee height. The goalie was dumbfounded. He was later overheard saying that that stroke should be taught at the Olympic level with nods of agreement from his team. It took both teams another 10 mins to get back into the game. Big Dave scored a goal from the top of the circle after a well played ball into the foot by The Transurbanator Suss. The first half saw Maccabi up by 3 goals to nil.

Dr Flicker started the 2nd half unlucky with a clean hit only for it to be stopped by the goalie. Clean Sheet Roma had a ripper in goals while Long Arms Harley and the Professor Berhang kept feeding the balls to the forwards. Another goal by Big Dave sent the goalie into apoplexy. The final 2 goals were set up by man of the match Game Changer Rappa. Big Mouth Geiger was back in the team after a few weeks off trying to invent a spray to prevent his glasses fogging up.
