international day for people with disability -AJN 05.12.14

We are so proud to be the 'brains' behind the brilliant double-page spread that featured in the The Australian Jewish News several weeks ago, to celebrate International Day for People with a disability.

We were in frequent contact with the AJN to encourage them to run a special feature article on the International Day of People with Disability, to create social awareness and celebrate disability inclusion in our community.

We thank Zoe Kron and Adam Blau for their efforts in putting these articles together and look forward to this becoming an annual addition to the newspaper.

There are two common misconceptions in our community that these articles aimed to address:

  1. Misunderstanding about the variety of services and organisations on offer for Jewish people with disabilities. Individuals in our community may not understand or appreciate the uniqueness of organisations including Jewish Care Victoria,@Access Access Inc, Friendship Circle of Melbourne, Maccabi Victoria All Abilities, Camp Sababa Melbourne, Bnei Akiva Melbourne Shevet Yuval. etc. These articles outlining each organisations specific role and stipulating their differences aims to help overcome this problem.
  2. There is also a common misconception in the Jewish community about the capabilities of those with a disability. The stories that were run on some of our All Abilities members celebrates their achievements. We hope that the community is pleasantly surprised to hear about the successes of this extraordinary group of people.
