A year in review

Posted: 27-Aug-2018 by All Abilities

This year we offered a number of programs and events and developed and strengthened ties within the Maccabi, Jewish and sporting communities. We’ve supported Maccabi programs such as the NSW All Abilities program and Junior Carnival, worked closely with clubs such as swimming, basketball and AJAX football, partnered with organisations such as Jewish Care, Access and Flying Fox, and are collaborating with the likes of Disability Sport and Recreation and Special Olympics.

Our 2017-8 calendar has featured dance, AFL, our inaugural games night, tenpin bowling, participating in basketball tournaments and the annual Maccabi/MS Swimathon, as well as regular programs such as basketball, swimming and table tennis.

Highlights this year have included:

  • Through our involvement with the JDN (Jewish Disability Network), we co-delivered two events focussed on breaking down communication barriers between those living with a disability and those who do not (for International Day of People with a Disability 2017 and Limmud Oz 2018).
  • We’re proud to have been recognised by Glen Eira Council, being named joint winner of the 2018 Community Group of the Year Award at their Australia Day breakfast, and asked to address award recipients at the annual Volunteer Recognition Evening.
  • Our members involved with the AJAX football clubs were excited to come back for another year in their coaching and volunteering roles.
  • January saw Junior Carnival return to Melbourne with 3 All Abilities athletes participating, as well as several older members getting involved in a volunteer capacity.
  • Alexia Keats (All Abilities swimming coach/Disability Sport and Recreation’s 2017 Coach of the Year) joined the office team in the role of Program Support.

None of this would be possible without amazing support from Gandel Philanthropy, Alan Synman and Family, The Department of Sport and Recreation, the Meydan Family and the Jack and Robert Smorgon Families Foundation. We also thank those who chose to direct their Charidy donation towards the All Abilities program, and those who have kindly shared their simchas with us.
