The Year that Was

Posted: 24-Aug-2017 by All Abilities

With the upcoming Maccabi Victoria AGM it's a great opportunity to look back at the year that's been.

The All Abilities program has had a big year, with over 130 activities including both usual sport training and special events. Some highlights from the program calendar have included AFL visits, horse riding, getting to go behind the scenes at the Grand Prix and participating in the annual Maccabi/MS Swimathon, as well as regular programs such as basketball, swimming and fitness.

This year has also seen an increased number of partnership programs, with activities been run in conjunction with Jewish Care, Access Inc, Flying Fox, Friendship Circle, Basketball Victoria, WIZO Kids and a number of mainstream Maccabi clubs. Joining forces with these organisations has allowed for program cross-promotion, resource sharing and invaluable support. Most notably, our 2016 event for International Day of People with a Disability saw over 100 community members enjoy an afternoon at the Armadale Bowls Club, and planning is well underway for our 2017 event.

This past year has also been one of new opportunities – it saw an All Abilities member participate in an entire interstate Junior Carnival for the first time, we have taken on social work student placements through Monash University, and it has also seen a number of All Abilities members get involved in the mainstream footy clubs in a variety of roles.

Our program and its advocates have been recognised through a number of avenues, including:

On a larger scale, 2017 has been a time of planning, development and growth for Maccabi’s inclusive initiatives, with a new All Abilities strategic plan created, an Inclusion Action Plan for Maccabi Victoria developed in conjunction with VicSport, and the establishment of the Maccabi NSW All Abilities program.

None of this would have been possible without immense support from our sponsors Gandel Philanthropy, Alan Synman and Family, The Department of Sport and Recreation and the Jack and Robert Smorgon Families Foundation. We would also like to thank those who chose to direct their Charidy donation towards the All Abilities program, and those who have kindly shared their simchas with us.
